Whilst I have a focus on biology, I am always looking at other influences that could be limiting and then try to address them as well. The strategy is to utilise the biology for salt mitigation in the plant whilst the Sequest will help move it through the profile. The The Good Food Institute‘s 2023 State of the Industry report on Fermentation is unsurprisingly filled with great content but I’m still reeling from a figure shared in the introduction entitled “Comparative diversity of animal, plant and microbial species.” 1. For every plant species, there are about 22 animal species—I definitely thought that ratio ran the other way around 2. For every animal species, there are 100k+ microbial species, which is nearly the entire number of plant species on earth! I’m simultaneously struck by the imperative to protect the complex life forms we share this planet with who are not nearly as numerous as I previously thought (especially plants!) and also by the realization that we have only begun to scratch the surface of understanding the vastness of microbial life. Both of these thoughts make me even more excited about the potential of synthetic biology and biomanufacturing.

Excited to share our multi-author review now published at The Plant Cell: "Perspectives on improving photosynthesis to increase crop yield". Several leading researchers in the field of photosynthesis (and me 😶) discuss how we can use modeling, natural variation, and my personal favorite, genetic engineering, to sustainably improve crop performance in the face of climate change. Special shoutout to our section on plant photoprotection (NPQ), covering what Kris Niyogi & I think are the reasons why NPQ has been successfully engineered in some species but not others 🌤🌾.

Could there be natural herbicides under the sea? We think so. Some marine biologists estimate that more than 90% of ocean species are still unknown to us. There is incredible diversity among the new organisms being discovered, with many possessing DNA sequences unlike anything else described on land or under the sea. For Moa researchers, this novelty and diversity in the ocean biome offers an exciting opportunity as we continue to build our bioherbicide development pipeline.
