Footy came to Newmont Telfer when our operation hosted players and supporters from a number of communities across the Western Desert, including Nullagine (Irrungadji), Punmu, Kunawarritji, Kiwirrkurra and Hedland communities. Some of the keen Martu players travelled up to 800km for the event! Telfer has a rich history of supporting Martu’s Desert Sports Development Program which is now run by Ngurra Kujungka. On the first day, Telfer hosted the Western Desert Shield match under lights between Yapurra (west side communities) and Kakarra (east side communities). On the second day, a combined Martu team (the Western Desert Warriors), took on the mighty Telfer Geckos – our very own Newmont Telfer team captained by Martu man and Newmont trainee, Gethyn Derrell. A big crowd turned out at Telfer Oval to watch the match, which was won by the Warriors. Three bands also entertained the crowd on both evenings: the Yuti band from Strelley community led by Anthony Ginger; Wild Dingo Band from Punmu and Kunawarritji community led by Clifton Girgirba; and the Kiwirrkurra band from Kiwirrkurra community led by Erin West. ESS catered for both evenings with a large BBQ at the Sports Club down at the oval. What a great weekend! Thank you to the communities who travelled, those who pulled on the footy boots to have a run on the oval, and our Telfer Social Performance team and Ngurra Kujungka for making it all happen. #NAIDOC2024 #BlakLoudProud
