This chart is incredibly telling and meaningful. This is ad spend per format vs. time spent. Very simple. Two things. 1) What an opportunity in CTV that will only continue to get better 2) Desktop and mobile are watered down with ads, making them so much less influential. What it also demonstrates is that advertisers are humans and humans overvalue 'the familiar' to the detriment of 'the unfamiliar', even when it makes no rational sense. And, that cheap CPMs are really compelling!

Meta suggests that combining vertical 9:16 video ads with other formats in ad sets can improve performance. They analyzed over 1 million ad sets and found that mixing vertical video ads with audio alongside other formats led to 18% more conversions per dollar compared to ad sets with only vertical videos. This strategy allows for better optimization in the auction process, leading to more efficient and customized ad delivery. Mixing different ad formats helps leverage more inputs for improved results, making ad campaigns more effective. This data comes from ads running globally between January and February 2024 across various industries.
