A key best practice in family therapy is ensuring that every family member feels heard and understood. This involves creating a safe and inclusive environment where each person can express their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. At Sound Advice Counseling & Psychotherapy, applying this practice could involve structured communication exercises that encourage each family member to share their perspective, fostering a deeper understanding and connection within the family unit.

Lucy Tomkins, Family Recovery Coach at The Soke, reminds us that when we care for children, we need to ensure that we're looking after ourselves too. Focused on supporting families dealing with addiction, Lucy's expertise help families to heal, with lasting results. "Children need a safe adult caregiver who can help to co-regulate their nervous system," she explains. "That means we have to deal with our own 'stuff' first, so that we're able to self-soothe and self-regulate our own nervous systems. We won't always get it right and that's fine too, so long as for each rupture in our children, there is a repair. Otherwise, it can lead to trauma." How to Help Adult Children With #ASD Given the complexity of challenges facing adult children on the spectrum, there is no quick fix. What concerned, supportive parents can do, however, is to: Embrace the gifts that come with their adult child being neurodiverse and be tuned in to their struggles to reduce a sense of unwittingly expressing blame or shame. Do what you can to help your adult child on the spectrum get counselling and psychiatric care if warranted. Be patient and empathetic to their differences–don't be locked into seeing your child's #ASD as necessarily a negative thing. The biggest supports for your adult with #ASD stem from realizing where the boundaries are between what you can healthily do and not do to help them cope with stressors, what they need to do to accept certain challenges, and continuing to encourage them to rise above frustrations to strive to overcome/manage obstacles.

"In 2000, few of Minnesota’s public-school students had access to mental health therapy within the school building. Today, over half of students do. Health officials want families to know that students can access mental-health services at school, whether or not they can pay. In-school mental health looks different from district to district, and even from school to school. And high demand can lead to long waiting times. But state grants ensure that over 1,000 Minnesota public schools provide therapy in their buildings." Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/et9wz6yb

This is a wonderful systematic review and meta-analysis exploring the links between childhood trauma/adverse childhood experiences and the likelihood of experiencing chronic pain in adulthood. The risks seem to be very meaningful, but more consistent for some types of trauma than others. Moreover, the study showed that there is a cumulative effect - more trauma exposure in childhood leads to great risk of adult chronic pain. When considering the high rate of single and cumulative childhood trauma globally, this finding can have huge impacts on understanding health and wellbeing in adults worldwide. From a methodological perspective, the authors assessed study quality to avoid a GIGO phenomenon (the majority were acceptable) and did an outlier analysis and an assessment for publication bias. This is a well done meta-analysis. There is a link to the original study at the bottom of the summary I’m sending you too. The article is open sourced. For those with privacy concerns, if you set your VPN to an EU country, you’ll get options to avoid cookies. “… individuals who have been exposed to various forms of traumatic events in childhood are at an increased risk of experiencing chronic pain and pain-related disability in adulthood, particularly those subjected to physical abuse. The cumulative impact of exposure to multiple ACEs further exacerbates this risk.”
