When new authors ask me to read their stories and give them feedback, before I even consider reading the text, I always ask them which age group they are writing for. More often than not they say “I am writing a story for all age groups”. Of course, as authors we want our book to be loved by young and old alike, but the type of book written for a 4-year-old, is not the same type of book written for an eight-year-old or pre-teen. One of the most basic criteria that needs to be considered when writing a children’s book is text length. Children’s book publications have general guidelines regarding word count for each age group. These standards are accepted almost globally. The average children’s picture book for the 4-6 year old category should be between 500-1000 words (and many publishers will say no more than 800 words). This is one of the challenges of writing a children’s book. How do you fit a great story in 500-800 words? Authors, editors, and parents too need to be aware of word count. If a text is too long, a child will become bored. One of the biggest mistakes I see new authors make (especially in religious children’s books) is trying to say too much. You don’t have to give every single message in one book. What do you want the child to remember? What is the goal of the story? What message needs to be said in the text and what part of the story can be supported with illustrations?
