Day 2 after hurricane in Houston: “Disaster Community” has begun. 5 families from our church — and two from outside — have spent the day in our home. We have power when most don’t. We have shared meals, sung songs, and sat and talked. We are preparing sleeping arrangements for all. Our church has facilitated housing for many and are making sure that members are safe and cool. During our time together, we reflected on why we don’t spend more time with the people we care about most. The answer: convenience and habit and the pull of isolation. Isolation is destroyed in Disaster Communities. I would submit that this is exactly what our country needs most. We have republicans and democrats eating together and watching kids (and dogs). We are not watching the news or social media. What if our nation operated like Disaster Communities? What if we cared more about connecting and sharing and less about all that divides? What would it take to keep this approach beyond the disaster? #hurricane #houston #disaster #community

Hurricane-to-Topical Storm #Debby slows to a crawl, dumping torrential rain across #Florida, #Georgia, #SouthCarolina, and #NorthCarolina. This extreme water volume in such a short time is heavily hampering rescue and relief efforts. American Red Cross #volunteer and staff teams are staged and operating in each of the noted states, working with #community partners to provide shelter, food, water, family reunification, pet assistance, disaster mental health services, clean-up supply distribution, #home damage assessment, and more. Your help in keeping us there longer and providing more assistance is greatly needed. Areas still recovering from disasters a year ago like #HurricaneDorian and #HurricaneIdalia in Florida have no reprieve; people in all of these areas need us: RedCross.org/HELP. #DisasterResponse #DisasterRelief #RedCross Photo and article: NY Times-Breaking News and https://lnkd.in/gj3fg-DU.

During moments like this, the stories and messages we create and share are powerful. They affect the people reeling from shock and loss, the animals needing support, and the helpers within and outside impacted communities. Our stories and messages lay the groundwork for how we think and feel about disasters, and whether we can prevent suffering in the future. We need to use our stories and messages for good. Really good insight from SPARC about how best to talk about this disaster in a manner that helps those impacted and directs those that want to help. Honored to be noted in the blog too!

Do you know people impacted by Hurricane Helene? Have you checked in with people you know in areas that might have been impacted by Helene? Have you told people that you’ll keep them in your thoughts or prayers? Are you continuing to keep them in your thoughts and prayers? Daily Shake Up No. 958 is a reminder of the importance of honoring our commitments to keep people in our thoughts and prayers. Hurricane Helene was a devastating storm that impacted many states and millions of people. The death toll is currently at 107 and it will rise. Millions of people are still without power, thousands are still stranded, and tens of thousands are dealing with significant property losses (including now being homeless). In times of tragedy it’s easy to check in and tell people that we’ll keep them in our thoughts and prayers, but it’s not so easy to honor that commitment. It’s easy to go back to our normal lives unless we’ve been directly impacted. Your thoughts and prayers matter and keeping them coming matters more than you can imagine. Keep the thoughts and prayers coming for those who have impacted by Hurricane Helene! #SnowGlobeLeadership #NischwitzGroup #SnowGlobeLiving #Leadership #HurricaneHelene

🌪️ Advocating for Relief Funding: Supporting Our States Impacted by the Hurricane Season 🌪️ As this year’s hurricane cycle continues to devastate communities across multiple states, the need for swift and substantial relief funding has never been more urgent. Families are facing the loss of homes, businesses, and essential services, while recovery efforts are stretched thin. Now is the time to come together and advocate for the resources our hardest-hit states need to rebuild and recover. Relief funding can provide critical support for: • Emergency shelter and food • Infrastructure repair and restoration • Healthcare services for displaced and affected populations • Economic aid for small businesses and local economies We must push for immediate action to ensure that no community is left behind in the wake of these destructive storms. Let’s continue to raise awareness, engage our leaders, and demand the necessary relief funding to support our fellow citizens in their time of need. Together, we can help our states come back stronger. 💪🏽 #ReliefFunding #HurricaneRecovery #CommunitySupport #EmergencyRelief #DisasterRecovery #Advocacy #Resilience

In the preparation for and aftermath of natural disasters like hurricanes, there is often a troubling increase in domestic violence. As families face heightened stress, displacement, and uncertainty, vulnerable individuals can find themselves at greater risk. Since Hurricane Helene, we have seen a 70% increase in domestic violence cases where strangulation was reported. We must remember that domestic violence doesn’t stop when disasters strike—in fact, it can escalate. It’s crucial that we come together as a community to raise awareness, offer support, and ensure that resources are available for those in need. Even during the hurricane, our hotline is available 24/7. If you need assistance, call 727-442-4128. Let’s stand strong, protect each other, and ensure no one is left behind. #domesticviolenceawareness #hurricanerelief #SupportSurvivors #CommunityStrong #enddomesticviolence
