Apple relents and approves Spotify app with EU pricing Spotify will begin showing in-app pricing information for iPhone users in the European Union starting today, following a yearslong legal battle against Apple. In an update to an old blog post, Spotify says that EU iPhone users will now see things like promotional offers and pricing information for each subscription tier — including how much a plan costs once a promotion ends. One thing that’s missing is the ability to click a link to make those purchases from outside the Apple App Store. Spotify says it’s opting into the “music streaming services entitlement” that Apple introduced after being served a €1.84 billion (about $2 billion) EU antitrust fine in March for “abusing its dominant position” in music streaming, rather than accepting... So Spotify are killing Car Thing, a nifty little device that I paid over €100 to import from the US last year. I didn’t use it in my car as it has wireless Apple CarPlay but I do use it at my desk as a dedicated Spotify screen. It’s actually great and I wish they had put more effort into developing it as a dedicated music streaming device and not angled it just for cars. This seems overall like a bizarre decision to me - I paid for the device yet will not be able to continue to use it as a paying Spotify customer? Is this going to become normalised now? Killing the software and bricking my device is making me consider flipping to a different service. Does anyone have any ideas on how to save the device with a different OS? Even a Raspberry Pi seems to large to save this form factor.

Spotify faces a class action lawsuit over its discontinued Car Thing device, which was launched in 2021 and discontinued in July 2022 due to pricing, inflation, and supply chain issues. Plaintiffs allege Spotify misled consumers by selling a product they knew would soon become obsolete. Existing Car Thing devices will cease functioning by December 9, 2024. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for all purchasers, claiming deception and concealment by Spotify. This legal challenge adds to Spotify's ongoing disputes, including lawsuits from the Mechanical Licensing Collective and the National Music Publishers Association over royalties and unlicensed lyrics. https://lnkd.in/gdaB2MrN #Spotify #CarThing #musicstreaming

The remaining top spots were occupied by Apple Music, PS Plus gaming subscription, and Netflix. By May 2024, the landscape had shifted significantly, with YouTube claiming 3 of the top 5 spots. Notably, Netflix was bumped from the top 5. 🎉 The evolution of user preferences highlights the growing dominance of YouTube’s suite of services in the digital entertainment space.

Spotify is raising its prices in the US next month. The premium plan will be $11.99, up by $1, and the Duo plan for two users will be $16.99, up by $2. The family plan will cost $19.99, up by $3. But the student plan stays at $5.99. This increase might happen in other countries too. In Pakistan, prices have already gone up a bit. Spotify’s rival, Apple Music, might also increase prices to match. Despite the hike, Spotify is doing well financially, with more revenue and subscribers. So, it seems the price increase is more about business strategy than desperation. #SpotifyPriceHike #MusicStreaming #SubscriptionIncrease #AppleMusicComparison #MarketTrends #BusinessStrategy #sparkpakistan
