STA Board Member and CEO of ASVA : Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions, Michael Golding, spoke to BBC Radio Scotland this afternoon, following the publication of an open letter co-signed by business groups representing three of Scotland’s most important sectors (tourism and hospitality, retail and financial) calling for an urgent solution to proposed industrial action. A summary of the points discussed👇 📅The strike would occur during a critical time for Scottish businesses across all sectors: August is a primary month of the year during which 3 million people are expected to visit Edinburgh alone. 🏴The reputational damage for brand Scotland could be significant and last for years; rubbish piling up has an impact on visitor experiences and their lasting impressions of Scotland. The images they take can be seen around the world too. 🚧It’s already a challenging climate for businesses, with varied profitability and ongoing pressures, so an additional barrier during a critical month is hugely concerning. 📻 Listen from 12:19 here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gPRWX7J

THAT's what I mean when I say, "treat code as a liability, not as an asset." Given two possible solutions to the same problem, prefer the one that creates the desired outcome with the lower complexity. Each line of code, each library, each dependency that you introduce without need - will haunt everyone working on the codebase until someone removes it. Asset thinking is: "if we add this-or-that, it will provide extra benefit ..." It leads to bloated code that is hard to work with. Liability thinking is: "if we add this-or-that, we have to pay to maintain it, so unless we have evidence that the additional cost will pay off, let's just not add anything." It leads to efficient, easily workable code. Don't create a "just in case" solution inventory. I can guarantee you that there will be a simpler solution than whatever you implemented today. It's much harder to rework the pointless complexity added today than it is to make a small addition later. Unnecessary code is not value. It's harmful. Get rid of it, as quickly as possible. https://lnkd.in/gu7XpSJz Sports betting is a relatively new industry in the US. Until 2018 you could only legally bet on sports in the state on Nevada, the home to Las Vegas. New Jersey was the first state to legalise sports betting six years ago and since then, a total of 38 states across America have done the same. Hannah Mullane looks at how the industry has grown so rapidly and discusses the consequences of the industry which has been allowed to evolve with very little regulation #sportsbetting, #regulation, #businessdaily, #gamblingaddiction, #economics, #legalization
