I am profoundly saddened by the extraordinary disaster that continues to unfold at the Newton burial ground - a designated cultural heritage site of significant cultural and historical importance, owned by the Barbados Museum and Historical Society. There are some in our midst who believe that this land is sacred, and while emblematic of the atrocities of the transatlantic slave trade it has become a place of catharsis and reverence for many Bajans who visit the burial ground on a daily basis. Conversely, for others, there is nothing sacred about this land. In fact, this land is so un-sacred that there are leaders in our midst who have been given the task to oversee the development of this site for a memorial acknowledging the lives of hundreds of enslaved human beings, yet see fit to run bulldozers on this hallowed ground near to the burial ground in a way that has ruined centuries of material remains that could have offered us insight into the lives of the Enslaved who are interred nearby in one of the most intact enslaved burial grounds in the Western World. The damage to the slave village site is so extensive that the site can never be studied by archaeologists in the correct way - yet they are trying to sift through piles of debris. This is how we commemorate our dead and the little we know of their lives. The irony is not lost on any of us that building a memorial to our foreparents in such a disrespectful way, damaging the very land where the bodies are interred, is indeed an oxymoron. Why is our government building a memorial to enslaved people and in doing so, using a bulldozer to scrape away any evidence of the enslaved village and possibly some of the burial grounds? This is not a rhetorical question. How are we as a post-independent society overseeing the rabid destruction of sacred ancestral lands? Why are we paying lip service to the community who deeply reveres this land while implementing such a poor approach to construction using worse case practices that disregard our ancestors on whose shoulders we all stand? Over 700 people have signed a petition asking the government to put a temporary pause on the construction at Newton to address their concerns yet the work continues with the recent installation of two crane booms now on site. Rather than respect the request by the community to pause, the work seems to have accelerated. Statement continues below in comments section. Please sign the petition and share with your communities to do the same. https://lnkd.in/e6bK3B9f #amemorialtonothing #unlearntheplantation

7 Sites in 7 Days: Day 4 - Heritage assets at Rame Head showcase a remarkable achievement! 🎉 Redoubts 1-3, at Maker Heights, consists of three designated protective areas that are listed under the same scheduling on Historic England's ‘Heritage at Risk Register’, with the primary threat being overgrown vegetation. The Monumental Improvement project (MI) has collaborated with the Rame Conservation Trust and volunteers from the Bee Mindful project to effectively manage the vegetation at the Redoubts. MI will also be creating digital media assets, such as 360-degree videos and reconstruction illustrations that depict the historical appearance of the Redoubts, which will be incorporated into the digital interpretation of the sites. These efforts have significantly aided in the successful removal of the Redoubts from the ‘Heritage At Risk Register’. Discover more about the MI here: https://bit.ly/3RSBEZ1 The MI project is primarily funded thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund 📷: Top - Redoubt 1, Bottom Left - Redoubt 2, Bottom Right - Redoubt 3 #cornwall #nationallandscapesuk #protectedlandscape #heritage #heritagefund #archaeology #history #ancient #monuments #monumentalimprovement #HeritageAtRisk #fyp
