NSW's proposed youth bail laws fly in the face of several High Court of Australia judgments explicitly stating that Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) s 10 applies to state criminal legislation. Research like mine has already established that Bail Act 2013 (NSW) racially discriminates. From January 2016 to May 2019, 57.88% of non-Indigenous male adults who were accused of indictable offences in NSW received pre-trial release. In contrast, only 34.92% of Indigenous males were released into the community pending trial. That racial discrepancy could not be reasonably attributed to chance or other confounding factors. I hope wiser heads eventually prevail. The NSW pre-trial detention system is broken enough as it is. THE TRUMP APPROACH TO DOMESTIC EMERGENCY AID During his presidency, Trump's primary criterion for determining whether emergency aid should be given to a state or locality was whether or not the state/locality was Blue or Red. If Red, shower it with aid; if Blue, deny the aid. Politics is, admittedly, a game. But one of the game's rules -- until Trump -- was once the election chose a winner, all of America -- both Red and Blue -- were treated the same because all were Americans. Except in the mind and world of Trump, which is why Trump is unhappy with the Biden-Harris response to Hurricane Helene and to the dockworker's strike. Whereas Biden-Harris sees Americans in all areas (Red and Blue), Trump only sees Americans in Red areas. Yet Trump wants to be president of all of America. https://lnkd.in/ePuHmyad

By their nature, emergencies tend to be sudden and unforeseen. As the devastating example of Lahaina has shown us, emergencies can come with profound costs, both human and financial. Political leaders can anticipate such problems by putting away money in emergency funds or keeping government spending low in order to build up a surplus that will serve as a cushion, if necessary. Unfortunately, that’s not what Hawaii has done.
