Honest personal post alert. I had my last major orthopaedic surgery 21 years ago in May. My orthopaedic surgeons have all been world leaders in their field and I'm grateful that their expertise means I can walk after 4 huge surgeries, albeit with a stick. However, it came at a cost: enormous amounts of pain mean that every day is exhausting. I don't always show it or talk about it, but I'm in pain all the time with (what was then early onset) osteoarthritis. Nothing can be done for me, I know all the exercises, I've had what little Occupational Therapy I need. I just have to live with it. But to regularly go through an assessment process that causes huge amounts of stress to keep the car that allows me to work and live a near normal life, is cruel. There's no cure for osteoarthritis, it's only going to get worse with age. This year I almost lost the benefit that pays for my car. Without that car I would struggle to work, I wouldn't be able to shop for food alone, my independence would disappear. Every time I go through the assessment process, somebody with no experience of orthopaedic work makes judgements about how my disability impacts my life. I don't actually get to be heard until I appeal if they find against me. I've taken the DWP to a tribunal once already (and the judge involved told the DWP that my case should never have come to court). Why are we doing this to disabled people? I think I know. It's easy to claw back money from the most vulnerable. Finding someone to advocate for you is hard. I'm lucky, I'm motivated, happy to fight the system myself and I'm articulate so I'm able to make the case clearly. But I shouldn't have to...and if the UN is saying you're not doing this well, it's time to listen.

I watched this and I saw myself a very long time ago when I first worked as a case manager. Everyone in the "group home" pitched in. Everyone. Who needed help lifting someone to the bath, or bathroom, who needed to be fed correctly to prevent choking, the driver would help cook, I would do the mopping. It is family. It is difficult and it is a job that will live with you forever. I still have in my heart, everyone who touched my soul. It is not only the money. It is the benefits, the pride, the feeling of being a true professional. Why, when one cares for another who needs the assistance, the professional factor goes down. Why? But seeing that AHRC New York City ADAPT Community Network and other excellent organizations are providing just that- a professional edge with credentialing, with workforce initiatives and trainings like Ben Drew's Open Future Learning, there is a wider awareness of what Direct Support Professionals (DSP) do. Nobody knew. Never knew. In this situation, social media is doing a good thing. Opening the hearts and minds of the average person to see what DSP do, what it is like for the individual who needs the assistance, and what could happen to these individuals who cannot find the help.
