Vigorous debate is a bedrock of democracy, and in this era of fierce polarization we at Newsweek believe the public is best served by a civil national discourse that reflects diverse perspectives. With that mission in mind, Newsweek is partnering with the Stubblefield Institute to celebrate the people and organizations who work to foster good-faith debate and bridge political and cultural divides. Nominate an individual or institutions who support this ideal at https://lnkd.in/ddWAP5Kf.

The final video in our video series on American Identity discusses the ways MINDSETS can help us think about who we are and who we could be. Access all three videos here: https://lnkd.in/ezVM_NGX

What is happening in America is the resurfacing of a tendency to violence that previously dominated American politics until the 1960s. Until that point, the use of voter intimidation, corruption and violence in local politics was heavily normalised in many areas of the country. The antebellum period, the Reconstruction, the Red Scare/Nadir of Race Relations, and the Counterculture Movement are prime examples. What makes the resurgence of this tradition so alarming is that this time, it is married to an increasingly authoritarian, anti-democratic worldview on both extremes of the political spectrum. Whereas previously the dispute was on what constitutes liberty, now the argument is about overthrowing liberty and replacing it with something else.
Prof Robert Pape@CPOST_UChicago discusses the broader factors driving Trump's growing radical support in this lengthy interview on NPR San Francisco: https://lnkd.in/g28N6yqr
