Newton Design has had a mutually beneficial business relationship with CymSTAR for many years. Several months ago, CymSTAR was asked to perform a technical refresh on an interactive exhibit called the Cosmolander Simulation located at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum (TASM) . My 3D photogrammetry model of the famous Sarcophagus of the Spouses, housed in the Louvre Museum. This Etruscan masterpiece, dating back to the 6th century BCE, depicts a couple lying side by side on a funerary bed. Reconstructed with Capturing Reality (8k textures), this model posed challenges due to lighting conditions and the fact that the sarcophagus is behind glass. Vibrations from a variety of sources can have a detrimental impact on museum collections. Protecting museum collections from vibrations due to human activity and building construction is a recognized concern. In this article, WJE engineers Arne Johnson and Mohamed ElBatanouny, PhD, SE provide a number of case studies, including the recent NASCAR Street Race event where cars roared around the Art Institute of Chicago at speeds of nearly 150 mph. Each case study summarizes some of the factors that should be considered in museum facility operations to help reduce the risks to museum collections from these sources of vibrations.
