A report has been published into a fatal accident involving two gliders which collided during a competition flight near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, 17 August 2023. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/ea9nXw28 As part of the investigation, we analysed all midair collisions that occurred in UK airspace in the period between 2003 and 2023. In this period, 39 collisions were identified, of which 15 involved one or more fatalities to the aircraft occupants. No collisions involved a commercial air transport aircraft, and no person on the ground was injured because of a collision. There were 15 collisions between gliders in the period, three of which involved a fatality. Eight collisions occurred between gliders participating in a competition. Of the 30 gliders involved, 18 landed safely and 12 crashed. Ten pilots were able to parachute to safety following a collision. Analysis of flight recorder files showed that, in 2022, gliding competitions accounted for 8.5% of all glider hours flown in the UK. #GeneralAviation #AviationSafety #Gliding

January 26, 2024 BPIAA Counterpoint | Jim Crow Thinking When I board a flight, regardless of ethnicity or gender, I expect the pilot to be qualified or why would he/she be in the cockpit? This constant bashing of Black Pilots, Black Air Traffic Controllers, Black Technicians, Black Safety Inspectors, or Black Engineers is just plain ridiculous! This trash-talk that we’re less qualified, less intelligent, less capable, less competent is nothing more than “Jim Crow” thinking and belief! Question for these enlightened individuals? Could they get through pilot training, could they get through air traffic control training, could they get through technician training in an environment that doesn’t want you there, presupposes you don’t have the intelligence to be there, and is bent on failing you out? It’s easy to sit on your butt and talk, get in the cockpit and fly, get your headset and work local control or the arrival sector, let’s see how competent you are! Blacks in aviation and aerospace are absolutely qualified…but if these guys are so concerned then don’t fly on airplanes with Black pilots, and if it happens, ask for the DEI ticket refund!🤷🏾♂️

The importance of pre-flight procedures adherence and maintenance compliance is irrefutable. Every now and then we see cases in which pilots lack adequate safety measures and compliance with safety regulations and procedures. The simple action of draining the fuel tanks after a refuel or a long time without flying the aircraft may simply be the “last hole of the Swiss cheese” and cause inadvertent and fatal damage to an aircraft that should have been handled properly. No matter the level of experience, proficiency and flight frequency, we must always be aware of the risks involved in aviation. It’s great to be a pilot and live the lifestyle to the fullest, however, a “minor” error or misjudgment might be the last you make. As mentioned by Juan Browne in his awesome YouTube channel: “Aviation is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect.” I’ll take the opportunity to share and recommend his work as I find it to be one of the most comprehensive and thorough accident analysis/general aviation topics discussion you’ll find throughout the internet.
