Our Newton-Wellesley Hospital team is making a profound impact on the lives of people in Peru. For the past decade, Anesthesiologist Mark Hershey, MD, has led more than 80 members of our hospital to Kausay Wasi Clinic to provide surgeries and care to those in need. More than 600 procedures have been performed by our team. “Each trip has had a shared mission of focusing on general surgery needs while providing care at the same standard that patients receive here at Newton-Wellesley. In addition to manpower, Newton-Wellesley Hospital has contributed surgical, anesthesia, and pharmaceutical supplies to the missions in Peru,” explains Hershey.

🚨 Regional Anesthesia potentially reduces persistent opioid use after surgery and chronic post-surgical pain In our paper recently published ahead of print in Anesthesia & Analgesia, we conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials that administered any regional anesthetic technique in elective noncardiac surgeries and evaluated for either persistent opioid use or chronic post-surgical pain. Not many trials assessed for persistent opioid use but our meta-analysis indicated a significant effect for long-term opioid use (RR 0.48, 95% CI 0.24 to 0.96, 5 trials, 348 pts, low quality evidence). Also, our meta-analysis revealed a significant reduction of chronic post-surgical pain up to 6 months after surgery (RR 0.72, 95% CI 0.61 to 0.85, 19 trials, 3457 pts, moderate quality of evidence). Our a priori subgroup analysis for breast surgeries did not reveal an interaction with regional anesthesia. Results are limited by few studies (persistent opioid use) and moderate-large heterogeneity (CPSP). Read our study for more details. #regional #anesthesia #pain #opioids https://lnkd.in/gYkrpNCa

Dear Colleagues, A recent study at Medical Science Monitor explored the incidence and factors associated with hypothermia during intraoperative anesthesia. Out of 184 patients, 34.78% experienced unplanned hypothermia during the perioperative period. Logistic regression analysis identified several independent influencing factors, including body temperature at the start of surgery, set operating room temperature, duration of anesthesia, and age. These findings highlight the high prevalence of intraoperative hypothermia in patients undergoing general anesthesia interventions. Understanding these factors can help medical professionals better manage and prevent hypothermia during surgery. The complete report is now available on the Medical Science Monitor webpage. | https://lnkd.in/g-P3jQRM

The use of any medication -- even a "simple" antibiotic -- comes with risks, but the chances of an adverse reaction are very low. There is a time and place for each drug, which is why preoperative examinations, blood tests, and sometimes additional laboratory work are essential before surgery. Some drugs also may have side effects that can be minimized. For example, keeping the patient on the right amount of IV fluids can protect the kidneys from some anesthesia drugs that impact the kidneys indirectly. Please remember, anesthesia is very safe overall. Anesthesia is carefully monitored by the types of drugs used and the knowledge of those who administer them, as well as the way the patients are cared for after they have awoken from anesthesia. This is what matters most. swvetsurgery.com

In American hospitals, the procedures used after spinal surgery vary depending on the specific needs and condition of the patient. Generally, the first step is to monitor the patient closely in the post-surgical unit for several hours. This includes checking vital signs, assessing pain levels, and monitoring for any complications or adverse reactions to anesthesia. Once the patient is stable, they may be moved to a regular hospital room where they will continue to be monitored and receive pain management medication. The time taken to complete these procedures can range from a few hours to several days, depending on the complexity of the surgery and the individual's recovery. Physical therapy and rehabilitation may also be incorporated into the post-operative care plan to help the patient regain strength and mobility in their spine. It is crucial for healthcare professionals to closely monitor and follow proper procedures after spinal surgery to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient.

In a recent cross-sectional study 'Patients’ concerns and perceptions of anesthesia-associated risks', researchers found many patients were fearful of general anesthesia: "The possibility of undergoing general anesthesia frightens numerous individuals throughout the world. To some, the prospect of going under general anesthesia scares them more than the possibility of the actual surgery." At Solo-Dex, Inc., we've changed the game. Our Precision Acute Pain Service minimizes the health risks often associated with general anesthesia. It also facilitates quicker recovery and discharge, promotes home recovery with reduced opioid dependence. We have a gentler approach to ease your mind ahead of a surgery. - World Anesthesia Day is a global healthcare event celebrated on the 16th of October every year to raise #awareness about the importance of #anesthesia in medicine. - This day also recognizes the anesthesia professionals, often known as #anesthesiologists, who help patients undergo surgery without experiencing any discomfort. - Anesthesia is a medical procedure that prevents patients from feeling pain during treatments like surgery, tissue sample removal (e.g., skin biopsies), dental work, certain screening, and diagnostic tests. - It enables patients to undergo surgeries that improve their health and long lives. - This year, 2024, the theme of #WorldAnesthesiaDay is “Workforce Well-Being.” - The theme focuses on a vital aspect of anesthesia that impacts our members, the well-being of their patients, and national health systems. - Throughout 2024, WFSA will raise awareness of the importance and impact of well-being on the anesthesia workforce and the patients they serve.
