The premature passing of rugby legend Rob Burrow as a consequence of motor neuron disease, one of far too many rare and not-so-rare incurable illnesses, is a reminder of how much remains to be done therapeutically to provide all people the chance at a reasonable quality and duration of life. Millions of people still suffer from incurable illnesses, many of which strike young. Though most are not so well-known, each of these individuals’ lives, joy, and aspirations are needlessly cut short, and the misfortune sends irreversible shock waves through every one of their families and social networks. The urgency to address this need and the opportunity to have a transformative impact motivate me every day in the work that I do. Through effective use of data, I know we can collectively break through barriers in novel ways to reveal the secrets of these afflictions and develop effective therapies to renew the opportunity of life for the millions of people who are waiting. Not only can we, we must. More information about motor neuron disease and donations being accepted at: https://lnkd.in/dKhPuz2p https://lnkd.in/d3vkrnwK

One of the largest concerns some have with the Israel-Hamas war is how to help children in Gaza. We all care about these children, but know Hamas steals humanitarian aid sent to Gaza and uses it for terrorism. Including donations sent from people in other countries trying to help children. I've been ruminating on this issue because like any other ethical person, I think it's great to help save children. But (also like any other ethical person) I think it's not great to financially support terrorists. I just heard about an excellent nonprofit operating out of Israel, which provides pediatric cardiac care to a large number of children from Gaza. Bonus, their donations don't get stolen by Hamas! From their website: "Approximately 50% of the children are from the Palestinian Authority and Gaza, Iraq, and Morocco, more than 40% are from Africa, and the remainder are from Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Americas." They also provide training to Palestinian doctors and doctors from various other places where appropriate pediatric cardiac care is scarce (or non-existent). If you want to help children in Gaza without worrying your money ends up in Hamas' hands, donate to Save a Child's Heart here: https://lnkd.in/ezzfvadj

Today is National Fentanyl Awareness Day (@fentanylawarenessday). National Fentanyl Awareness Day is a day of action where hundreds of businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government offices work together to ensure Americans understand the risks of fentanyl, educate their families and friends, and learn how they can take steps to prevent overdose deaths. Last year, over 70,000 Americans fatally overdosed on illegally made fentanyl — nearly 200 deaths every day. Fentanyl is found in many common street drugs, yet users are often unaware that their drug contains the potent opioid. Fentanyl is 50X stronger than heroin and present in many illegal pills and powders teens might come across. Most kids don’t understand the dangers of fentanyl. This is an urgent public health crisis that puts all of us, and our loved ones, at risk. And we all can play a role in preventing future tragedies. What You Can Do: - Host a film screening of The New Drug Talk - Train your community on how to recognize & respond to an overdose - Help people learn how to get their own supply of naloxone - Post key facts on social media using the hashtag #NationalFentanylAwarenessDay - Provide financial or in-kind support to National Fentanyl Awareness Day - Talk to your children about their mental health and the risks of encountering illicitly manufactured fentanyl Spread the word with us and find more resources at https:// https://lnkd.in/gayjNRX8. . . . #NationalFentanylAwarenessDay #JustSayKNOW #NoRandomPills #PublicHealthCrisis #RaiseAwareness#standagainstfentanyl#Drugmisuse#Harmreduction#fentanylcrisis
