There's a lot of talk about "culture fit". It often focuses on whether you buy-in to some high-level statement of values. Andre Martin shows us that it is SO much deeper.
In his new book that comes out on 9/12, Andre shares his POV based on very deep expertise, experience, and research on how we can help both our organizations and our people thrive by more deeply considering what we mean by "fit".
You can pre-order it now: https://lnkd.in/gKQqYGjF
Andre, thanks for sharing your knowledge with the world!

Defining "fit" is so important. I have found that "Culture Fit" is often used (intentionally and unintentionally) to justify a "like-me" bias. As hiring manager for many years, it took me a long long time -- and friends who weren't afraid to call me out -- to realize that "Culture Fit" was an unconscious blocker in my ability to build cognitively diverse teams. Ever since I realized this and made a change, nothing has ever been the same again. You know my story.
Newton Cheng you are a saint and a good friend. Thanks for the props and the post. Truly, just want great talent to find a place where they can do their best work. Hope the book helps!

In September, we held our Global 5k with on-site races organized at 56 Google offices across the globe!
Thank you to the 12,832 Googlers who participated in the 5k, and 1,042 Googler volunteers who helped organize races in their cities. The initiative has raised over €7,114 for Action Against Hunger so far, an organization that’s pushing back against the predictable, preventable, and treatable problem of hunger around the world.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this event possible! #LifeAtGoogle

LinkedIn community: do any of you know anyone at The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business or The Ohio State University that might be interested in hosting a talk/workshop on overcoming mental health stigma?
My mission is to drive change around our culture of (mental) health and wellbeing in the workplace, and supporting the next gen of business leaders (i.e. students) is a HUGE part of that mission. I might be in Columbus Feb. 26 - Mar 1, and would LOVE to bring one of my workshops to OSU students (the more the better).
I have special resonance with #api#aapi groups due to my cultural background, but would love to support whoever I can.
DM me if you can help, much appreciated! 🙏 ❤️

A repost for #worldmentalhealthday
Nov 2021: I was about to give a keynote at a @Google wellbeing conference to an audience of industry leaders.
A pinnacle moment for my career.
A chance to talk about our amazing work.
I had crafted a compelling, inspiring talk
that hid the truth.
I knew what I had to do, even if I was terrified of doing it.
I threw out my prepared talk and instead
I told the audience what was really going on:
that I had long been struggling with depression and anxiety like so many others
and if we were going to talk about "wellbeing"
THAT's what we needed to talk about
because you can't solve a problem
if you can't even talk about it.
The biggest obstacle in our collective mental health struggles is stigma.
I can't solve that alone,
but life gave me struggles,
which gave me a story to tell,
during a moment we must meet.
So since that keynote, I've told my story across dozens of talks, and earned millions of impressions on social media all in an effort to drive cultural change.
I don't know how this will affect my "dream job" at Google. What's the career path of "the mental health guy"?
I get plenty of support and applause
but I also hear some of the quiet opinions being whispered about me
and have to assume there are 10x more that I don't hear.
And frankly, none of that bothers me at all.
Here's why.
My dream isn't "a job".
It's to help people take better care of themselves and each other.
Full stop.
But dreams don't pay the bills, right?
A job comes with a paycheck which I need . . .
but if I lose that I can get another one.
If I lose my integrity . . .
that's quite a bit harder to get back.
So I try to remember the following:
someday, my daughters may ask me "Dad, when people were struggling, but you were afraid to lose your reputation, what did you do?"
I know what I'll say.
"I started where I was, I used what I had, and I did EVERYTHING I could."
I think they'll be proud of me. I know I'll be proud of myself.
Because I had the integrity to cling to "my dream"
and not "my dream job".

Nicholas Whitaker is one of my favorite up and coming thought leaders on how we need to evolve workplace culture. He's gathering some of the best new thinking on this topic into a book coming out on 9/20, AND it's initially selling for $1.99.
Yes: less than two dollars.
Highly recommend picking up a copy (I will be too)!

So....I'm publishing a book!
The first of many with the amazing members of the Changing Work Collective.
It's grounded in the idea of Leading With Self Awareness.
If you've followed me for any amount of time, you've probably seen me share about my own experiences with leaders who lacked the necessary self awareness to create high performing teams and psychological safety.
We've curated an amazing collection of stories from leaders moving along their own self awareness journey, as a way to help destigmatize the struggle, and offer practical guidance to help you become the leader you know you can be, and want to be!
We're launching the book in just 7 days at just $1.99.
If we can get enough people to buy the book on launch day, we can get on the Amazon best seller list.
If you would like to support me, the Changing Work Movement, and leaders who are ready to step into self awareness, DM me #BOOKLAUNCH to be included in our launch team.
Here's to a future where self awareness isn't just a nice to have, but a fundamental component of what it means to be a conscious leader.

At USA Powerlifting Nationals last Thursday, I missed my last deadlift. A US record and championship slipped through my fingers.
And then I smiled. Here’s why.
Missing lifts like this one is brutally disappointing.
However, I never want to let my pursuit of being a great lifter get in the way of being a good man.
WHAT I lift is less important than
HOW I lift which is less important than
WHO I (up)lift.
And all that hinges on one important question:
WHY do I lift?
I’ve done decently well in powerlifting. Won championships, broken records.
None of that really matters.
If my journey is about me and what I accomplish, I’m still nobody. I’m just one lifter in a sea of lifters, many still way stronger and more accomplished than I’ll ever be.
A drop in an ocean of lifters and lifts.
One divided by infinity.
On the other hand,
if it’s about us as a community,
then I matter because WE matter.
Put another way, as the Buddhists might say, I am just one part of a massive but singular and unified whole that is made up of infinite different parts:
Different countries and federations,
different lifters in different meets and gyms,
with different styles, sets, reps, movements,
and infinite different moments in between.
Collectively, we ARE that infinity.
So I choose to see myself as part of the collective because how could something so infinite NOT matter?
It’s the difference between being a drop in the ocean, or dropping into and BECOMING the ocean.
But that’s just philosophy,
poetic imagery,
shoddy theoretical math.
We athletes are here to lift, and in this sport no one can lift the weight for you.
That missed lift/record/championship is mine alone.
But in that moment I smiled because I remembered WHY I lift: not to be a great lifter, but a good man who (up)lifts.
And such a man would smile even through the disappointment, because he gets to be part of something, good lift or not. And together we’re something amazing.
And for you?
After those “missed lifts”,
both in life and on the platform,
I hope you remember WHY you lift,
you see you’re part of something amazing
and it makes you smile too.
Note: the longer I do this sport, the more spiritual it becomes for me, and the more it becomes a lens towards how I see everything. "To know 10000 things by knowing one thing well" as Miyamoto Musashi said.
I hope this reflection acts as a "mirror" for you and helps you see a part of yourself that you might've otherwise under acknowledged.

The "status quo" has shifted on the conversation around mental health. If you still don't "get this mental health thing", you are increasingly behind.
My good friend, fellow mental health advocate, and very smart and interesting person at large Ennis Olson and I were talking today about how mental health is a HUGE topic at the Olympics.
However, the trend isn't being driven by the media. It's being driven by the athletes.
These athletes represent not just the world's top performers, but also reflect the POV of many of our future business and world leaders.
If you're like me, you weren't raised with awareness around your mental health. When my mental health got to a bad place, I was fortunate to be surrounded by people and resources (both at Google and beyond) that helped me learn, grow, and get to a better place.
I was behind on this topic, but I put in the work, first on myself, then on how I lead, and now I'm finally catching up.
The culture has shifted. The science supports the shift.
Don't get left behind.

What does my MOST important stakeholder want?
Achieve my quarterly goals?
Create enterprise value?
Get paid $$$ ?
Those are important, and they all matter to important stakeholders, but they're not what my MOST important stakeholder wants.
Sometimes my most important stakeholder
just wants me to dance with her
in a full body cat costume
and stop thinking
about work.
Happy Sunday everyone 😸
