....The universe is a pretty big place. If it’s just us, seems like an awful waste of space.- Carl Sagan
A post in an upcoming series of observations and support for delivering practical science in schools. Despite a wide range of excellent studies over the last 14 years from Ofsted, Dyson, CBI, Wellcome Trust, to name but a few, identifying what good science lessons look like and the need for much more practical science (it is after all an inherently 'practical' subject!)...there remain challenges for both primary schools and secondary schools in delivering effective and routine inspiring practical science lessons.....there is still far to much 'board work' and worksheets......this will not generate the nations, future scientists.

An important article by Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Sciences! The title is ''Keeping America “Science Strong”. She emphasizes several key suggestions for leadership in science: 1. Improve K-12 Education 2. Reduce Red Tape 3. Create a National Research Strategy 4. Modernize University–Industry Partnerships 5. Ensure Access to Major Research Facilities 6. Build Public Support for Science Some statements from the article on international students/researchers & collaborations: ''While US colleges and universities are still world class, a large fraction of graduate students (more than 1 in 3) and postdocs (more than half) in science, engineering, and medicine are international students...'' ''Even at the bachelor’s degree level, a full one-fifth of the S&E workforce in America is foreign-born ...'' ''Fifty years ago, it was possible for an individual university to host a major research facility, such as a particle accelerator or a telescope. Today, the frontiers of science have been advanced so far beyond what they were then that it takes an entire nation, or more likely, many nations working together to build, maintain, and get maximum benefit from a major science facility...'' https://lnkd.in/etKXgXD4
