When did you feel like you belonged in the environmental movement? 🌿💚 At our 10th Anniversary Celebration, we asked Ki'Ana Speights, M.A. of American Public Health Association and Hanna Lester of The Pew Charitable Trusts how they've navigated finding and building spaces of belonging. We all deserve to be affirmed, celebrated, and seen in our workplaces. Programs like the RAY Fellowship Program and Black Girl Environmentalist’s fellowship are foundational solutions to this gap. In the realm of major gift & capital campaign fundraising -one thing is for certain... Volunteerism is a key to raising significant revenues, accessing advocates to further the cause has no price but has great value. It can't be done with them. I recently said to a Founder of a wonderful organization that nothing happens without a 'champion'. Often this is a passionate volunteer who freely gives of their time, talent, and treasure. But what about us who are 'paid to raise'? Do we need to give of our time as well? Absolutely. I am a better practitioner because of my unpaid involvements in organizations like Rotary International, AFP Global, among others. Today I wish to let you know about an organization that I volunteer with, that is all volunteer run -no paid staff at all. M4M www.Medals4Mettle.org was started by Dr. Steve Isenberg MD almost 20 years ago. Competitive runners like myself award medals to cancer patients, plus others with life-threatening conditions. Both children and adults who are in the throws of cancer are the recipients of medals to encourage them in their own race. to date, an astounding 70,000 medals have been given. Wow. The medals are awarded to individuals who are "running a much more difficult race," often with an unknown finish line. The mission of M4M is to appreciate the pay-it-forward concept that links the distance runner’s mettle with the mettle it takes to battle life challenges. The donor's acknowledgement of the recipient's mettle encourages the recipient and creates a human connection honouring the grit, courage, and bravery they share. #medals4mettle #doitbecause

Every gift you make goes directly to programs that are transforming the lives of animals and their humans. Our Foster and Adoption program is a beacon of hope for the most at-risk animals in our partner shelters, while our preventative programs—like PASS, Dogs Matter, and Bark Dorm—work tirelessly to keep pets out of shelters and in loving homes. These initiatives are not just about rescue; they're about building healthier, stronger communities where animals and people thrive together. The need is urgent. Many of the pets that come into our care have medical conditions so severe that shelters simply can't provide the care they need. Over a third of the animals we help are Major Medical Cases, requiring $1,000 or more in medical expenses. In 2023 alone, we spent more than $400,000 on treatments ranging from basic vaccinations to heartworm treatment and life-saving surgeries. This year, as we've taken on the incredible work of Dogs Matter and face the overwhelming overcrowding in North Texas shelters, the number of animals in our care has more than doubled. For the first time, we have more than 500 animals relying on our programs. While we've made strides in fundraising, the financial demands have outpaced our resources.

For 50+ years, the Edmonton Singing Christmas Tree has brought people together to celebrate the season, but more importantly, also financially support charities in the local community. This event is a perfect example of how business executives, project managers, operational leaders, engineers, performance artists, volunteers, and administrative professionals can all work together seamlessly to find fulfillment beyond just a paycheck. The success of the Singing Christmas Tree demonstrates an important team-building principle. "Big Hairy Audacious Goals" can seem impossible and out of reach for our employees, but showing our team members how they can utilize their skills and areas of influence to contribute and support the "big picture" gives them a sense of connection, purpose, and achievement. https://lnkd.in/dHF_ji_7
