Enough is enough. Emergency staff are threatened every day, and abused/assaulted whether it’s physical, verbal or both. It’s a sad reality that emergency preparedness and readiness have turned from preparing a department for a disaster situation to help others into a survival plan for themselves. Take a moment and think about who goes to work everyday and is concerned with their own survival. Nurses and emergency staff should not be on that list. #enoughisenough
“The stabbing of an ED staff member in Minnesota on Monday – the first day of Workplace Violence Prevention Awareness Month – is another sad reminder of the frightening reality emergency nurses and their peers constantly face at work every day. I know I speak for many who wish the staff member a speedy recovery. I know I also speak for the entire ED community when I say enough is enough – there must be changes to better protect the health, safety and well-being of every health care worker, particular those on the emergency care team.” - ENA President Chris Dellinger #ENATogether https://bit.ly/4cFomIZ

How can you calculate the violence safety gap for your community care sites? The violence safety gap is the amount of time between a violent event beginning until police arrive. Time is a critical factor in planning community care site security measures. This is particularly true at sites with no security staff. Here are 3 factors to consider when estimating this gap for a community care site: ✅ Training: -Staff must understand how to communicate the nature of the emergency clearly so police understand the incident severity. ✅ Timing of Police Notification: -The faster the police can be notified of an incident, the faster they can be dispatched to respond. -Think prepared staff and access to monitored (body worn) panic alarms. ✅ Police Response Time: -Site location, police staffing levels and demand for routine and emergency services that can impact response times. -Response times for priority 1 calls are increasing across the US. 🔑 Security measures employed at a community site can help to shorten the violence safety gap and/or bridge this gap. Time should be a key consideration for any security strategies and tactics employed at community care sites. 🌟 Disaster Emergency Medical Assistance Fast Five Fridays! 🌟 At DEMA Consulting & Management Texas LLC., transparency is our goal. Every Friday, we will be sharing five fast facts, features, and statistics from the week or month. This week, we’re highlighting the importance of HART, a transformative program we have the honor of operating for the Harris County Public Health Department, as emphasized by its incredible supporters at the June 4th Commissioners Court hearing. 🚨 HART’s Impact by the Numbers 🚨 • Critical Mental Health Support: HART has increased access to mental health professionals in critical times of need, diverting over 11,000 calls from unnecessary legal system involvement. This has alleviated the jail population and freed up officers’ time to focus on public safety. • Community Safety Without Law Enforcement: HART connects individuals to resources like substance abuse treatment and housing, preventing criminalization and breaking harmful cycles of incarceration. This allows Harris County’s public safety resources to focus on violent situations, making our community safer and more efficient. • Life-Saving Continuity: Ensuring no interruption to the HART program is crucial. Every call HART responds to eliminates the risk of use of force, arrest, detention, and deportation, emphasizing the human costs and the importance of continuity for community safety. • Cost-Effective Public Health: HART has diverted over 11,000 calls, saving Harris County millions of dollars. It’s a financially and socially beneficial investment in public health and safety. • Reimagining Safety for All: HART increases public safety, supports individuals in crisis, and offers a preventative, rather than punitive, approach to community well-being. Investing in HART promotes overall well-being and reimagines safety for everyone in Harris County. 🌟 Thank you again to all our supporters for advocating for HART. Reimagining safety for everyone starts here. Your voices make a difference! Let’s continue to champion this essential program, together. 🤝 • • #SupportHART #CommunitySafety #FastFiveFriday #DisasterEmergencyMedicalAssistance

How can you calculate the violence safety gap for your community care sites? The violence safety gap is the amount of time between a violent event beginning until police arrive. It's no secret that time is one of the most critical factors in planning community care site security measures -particularly at sites with no security staff. There's no hard and fast formula to calculate the violence safety gap, but here are three factors to consider when estimating this gap for a community care site: ✅ Training: Staff must understand how to communicate the nature of the emergency clearly (no downplaying) so that police understand the incident severity. ✅ Timing of Police Notification: The faster the police can be notified of an incident, the faster they can be dispatched to respond. Think prepared staff and access to monitored (body worn) panic alarms. ✅ Police Response Time: Site location, police staffing levels and demand for routine and emergency services that can impact response times. Response times for priority 1 calls are increasing across the US. 🔑 Security measures employed at a community site can help to shorten the violence safety gap and/or bridge this gap. Time should be a key consideration for any security strategies and tactics employed at community care sites. 💡 This is another nugget of knowledge from my upcoming Field Manual on Community Care Site Security. Addressing this gap is the objective of several proposed pieces of legislation in North Carolina. Although local law enforcement strives to respond promptly, there are frequent reports of nursing staff and security experiencing extended wait times after violent incidents. While implementation may present challenges and require us to work together, the anticipated outcome is a safer working environment for our healthcare professionals and the closure of this gap. #NorthCarolina #HealthcareSafety #EmergencyManagement #BestPractices #EM #Preparedness #AlliedUniversal #RiskManagement #WorkplaceViolencePrevention Allied Universal
