"I used to earn 10,000 UGX per sale from bananas, but now I make 30,000 UGX." During our August visit to Uganda, smallholder farmers shared incredible stories of how our market access platform Farm Direct platform has transformed their livelihoods. This 3x increase in income is just one example of the tangible impact Farm Direct is creating. Farmers also spoke about how Farm Direct helps reduce wastage by connecting them to ready markets, ensuring that no produce goes to waste. They’re eager to see the platform expand into larger cities and international markets—because more demand means higher incomes. 🌍 Hearing their stories was inspiring and reaffirmed our commitment to supporting them even further. Together, we can keep boosting demand and driving even greater success for smallholders. #MarketAccess #SmallholderSuccess #FarmDirect #YouthInAgriculture

The cotton industry in Zambia has developed into the country’s largest quasi-formal distribution network with some 300,000 smallholder farmers with an estimated one million dependents participating in various out grower schemes. This important agricultural sector relies almost solely on input pre-financing schemes operated by out grower/ginning companies, who after pre-financing the farmers’ crop buy the seed cotton produced and deducts the value of the pre-financed inputs from the money payable for the seed cotton. https://lnkd.in/dn8JFA-X #AGRICULTUREAGRIBUSINESS #ASSOCIATIONFEDERATIONSYNDICATE

Earlier this morning, I had a brief call with one of my bosses Yusuf Ogunbiyi and I was like, omo, na farmers go suffer the rising cost of mechanization services for this our Nigeria as e dey go like this o. Boss man was like, NO O, farmers are not going to suffer for anything, and everybody should get a fair price for whatever they are offering in the agricultural value chain. So, my questions to you today - Are you getting a fair price for your goods and services? - And are you offering your vendors a fair price for their goods and services too? #fairprice #agriculture #agriculturalmechanization

The agricultural sector in Nigeria employs roughly 58% of the country's workforce, and is predominantly made up of smallholder farmers, who produce over 70% of the nation's food. However, Nigerian smallholders face challenges such as a lack of finance for farming inputs, poor knowledge of best farming practices, low yields and limited storage capacity. This perpetuates the cycle of poverty, with many smallholders living on less than $2 a day. GIF investee Babban Gona offfers an innovative agricultural franchise model that seeks to sustainably improve the lives of smallholder farmers. It does so by providing farmers with all they need to thrive - be this inputs, know-how, harvesting services, or storage facilities. This enables them to increase yields, lower production costs, and gain a higher price for crops, helping to sustainably improve their livelihoods. GIF invested $2.5m in Babban Gona in 2017 to help them expand and create even more impact for farmers. To date, Babban Gona has impacted nearly 850,000 individuals in communities. #investment #innovation #innovatingtogether #internationaldevelopment #globaldevelopment #agriculture
