How convenient for Gannett to be able to use a promise as a placeholder, putting people’s professional lives on hold while the company makes sure it can, in a way that suits its interests, keep its word. Maybe start with “we can’t promise anything but” next time with any extended “offers” like these. In an industry that’s graded on accuracy, and in an economy where deceit can be litigated in the most extreme cases (where the most blatant breaches of truth in advertising, for example, can land in court), what’s the cost to a company of misleading from within? Open question. I don’t know the answer despite decades of seeing these kinds of reports on some of the largest media companies in the U.S. Like everyone else who has worked in the industry and experienced the effects of such mercurial hiring swings and job cuts, what’s perhaps most striking is how there’s little to no expectation that management will ever be upfront or transparent about short-term, much less long-term, hiring or employment prospects — or stick to those stated plans.
Gannett is pausing a promised plan to restaff its smallest newspapers, meaning the company's outlets with few or no staffers are likely to stay that way for a while. Some candidates who were expecting to start soon have had the offer rescinded. According to internal communications, the “pause” has now been rolled over through the second quarter of 2024. What do we love about working with you? As former news and current affairs journalists we built careers on telling important stories. But we were constantly on the run - rushing from deadline to deadline, story to story. Now, we get to spend the day with you, learn about your important work and how it impacts all of us - but without having to turn it into a 90 second story for the 6pm news or a radio bulletin or get anything signed off by the legal team. #storytelling #nz #communications

The future for new journalists: low pay, long hours, job insecurity, and less meaning. From The Conversation US: "With a median wage in 2023 of $57,500, journalists’ salaries have not kept pace with inflation or jobs in public relations and corporate communication. "Job security, as ongoing layoffs suggest, is nearly nonexistent. Recent drives to unionize newsrooms have done little to stem losses, and they do nothing at all for the freelancers that constitute a growing share of all journalists – and, for the most part, belong to no union at all. "Inside or outside newsrooms, work typically involves longer hours and more demands. "And to what end? In many cases, it’s to perform tasks that aren’t that interesting or socially valuable. "The journalists we spoke to bemoaned the relentless demands to churn out new content for websites and social media feeds. They talked about using multimedia to report on topics that were assigned primarily for their potential to amuse and entertain, rather than to inform or provoke thought. They griped about spending more time sitting at their desks sifting through press releases instead of gathering original reports from the field. And they described fewer and fewer opportunities to pursue stories that are personally interesting and socially valuable."

Traits to Excel in the Field of Reporting. Many people have asked me about the essential qualities needed to be a reporter. Here, I’m sharing some key qualities 🔹 Flexibility: A reporter must be highly flexible, ready to work any shift, day or night. News is unpredictable, so quick adaptation to changing circumstances and schedules is essential. 🔹 Bilingual Fluency: Proficiency in both Hindi and English is crucial for effective communication. Additionally, knowledge of regional languages can be a significant advantage, allowing for broader audience reach and more comprehensive coverage of stories. 🔹 Camera Presence: A strong camera presence is vital. This involves being comfortable and confident in front of the camera, speaking clearly, and explaining complex information in an engaging and understandable manner. Being presentable and professional on camera is equally important. 🔹 On-Demand Availability: Reporting is not a 9-to-5 job. There are no fixed shift timings. You are completely responsible for your beat. If a breaking news event occurs after your shift, you must be ready to rush back without hesitation. 🔹 Commitment: Reporters are the backbone of a news channel, which operates 24/7. Taking leave is not as straightforward as in other professions. Not every reporter gets weekends off; for example, my days off are Monday and Tuesday. This level of commitment is necessary to ensure continuous and comprehensive news coverage. 🔹 Staying Informed: A reporter must always stay informed about current events and news developments. You never know when you might be called upon to provide a live report on a particular topic. Being well-versed in the latest news ensures that you can deliver accurate and timely information when required. That’s all for today. In my upcoming posts, I will be sharing more about the challenges of reporting and how to become a reporter or anchor, as this is a frequently asked question. Please feel free to ask any questions or share your comments. #Reporting #Reporters #Worklife #corporate #job #Media
