My stepfather and lifetime business mentor and partner Ron Burns turned 77 on Sunday. Ron married my mom when I was 8 years old and my life as a future entrepreneur began. Ron is old-school and put me in the warehouse from the time I was 9 until I was 15 when I started to install garage doors for his garage door company AR-BE Doors. This taught me the value of very hard work and putting the customer ahead of everything. At that time Ron was a pioneer of same-day garage door service and installation. (many years ahead of Amazon). Ron taught me and many others how to be a problem solver. Never any excuses, but just get it done now. We never went home until the job was done and the customer was happy. Old school hard work every day, every time. One of his favorite quotes is “there is no right way to do a wrong thing”. This meant always have integrity in everything you do for your team and customers. Put this at the center of everything. In 2002 Ron and I became partners starting NEXT Door & Window. I could not be more grateful to my father for showing me the true value of discipline, hard work, setting the standard, striving to be the best, and building trust through integrity. Happy Birthday to my stepfather Ron Burns. Thank you for being the hardest working, most loyal, and generous mentor and father that anyone could ask for.
