As of last night, it was announced that 25 members of the team at Annapurna Interactive's gaming division were leaving the studio this month. Nathan Gary, their president, was negotiating with Megan Ellison to spin off the studio into an independent entity. Unfortunately, the discussion did not go well and lead Gary, and other execs. as well as the team, to resign. Source: https://lnkd.in/gzzpgRnC My thoughts are with you all. HRBP | Talent Acquisition Manager | HR | Human resources | People Partner | | Recruiter | Product & AI SaaS | GAMEDEV & FinTech & Web3
Hi, fellows! I want to share some of my experiences with technical interviews. For over 5 years, I've been professionally involved in recruiting, and for 2.5 years, I've been hiring for PC projects on Unreal Engine. I've built backend, frontend, gameplay, and network programming teams from scratch twice in different companies. The most challenging position for me was Network Backend Programmer. This specialist needs to have knowledge of game engines, go through the path of gameplay development, possibly grow into a lead role, and then master backend development, understand client-server interaction, have basic DevOps knowledge, all while choosing not to pursue management and not becoming a CTO, but rather remaining focused on coding. Or perhaps the development path from a pure backend programmer to gameplay. Often, these individuals become backend leads and then, tired of FinTech or EdTech, decide to delve into game development and start from the bottom in learning game engines for gameplay or tools. These rare talents, like hotcakes, are snatched up by global studios, making it very challenging for startups to compete with them. More often than not, networking, happenstance, recommendations, or internal growth within a company are what help. Another rare specialist might be a render programmer or an engine programmer. Typically, there are only 1-2 of these individuals in a company. In game development, most programmers want to be gameplay developers because it's cool to create worlds and see the fruits of your labor turn into a game. But there are many of them in the market, leading to high competition. Consequently, the rates for gameplay programmers are lower than those for Network Backend Programmers and Engine Programmers. After all, not everyone wants to delve into the engine and configure it; it's difficult and time-consuming. However, finding such specialists is very difficult, and their salaries are often twice as high as those of gameplay programmers. At Farcana, we've found our specialist whom we're very pleased with. Additionally, we're forward-thinking and assist our programmers in learning and mastering even niche specialties. Our Network Programmer has apprentices whom we nurture to strengthen our team. Unfortunately, or fortunately, nearly all positions in game development are currently filled. At the moment, Marketing is actively growing and expanding. Keep an eye on our career site for updates, more jobs will be posted there soon. https://lnkd.in/dvX3W35s #hiring #gamedev #gamedevelopment #gamedeveloper #gamedevjobs

🎮 Calling all Game Developers & Coders (artists - this applies to you too). In addition a great CV, there's other tips to follow and put yourself out there and make your LinkedIn profile stand out. Here's a few: 💡Headline: Craft a clear and attention-grabbing headline that highlights your expertise and specialization in game development - emphasising on what you're looking for and what you've been doing for X number of years. Make it easy for recruiters and industry professionals to understand your role and skills at a glance. Additionally, utilise the summary section to showcase your passion for game development, your unique value proposition, and your career goals. Share insights into your journey, key achievements, and what drives your work in the gaming industry/software engineering 💡Skills/Endorsements: Compile a comprehensive list of your technical skills and competencies relevant to game development/software engineering in general, including programming languages, game engines (if applicable), and development tools. Encourage colleagues and connections to endorse your skills to enhance your credibility. You can also add certifications 💡Portfolio: Leverage the media-rich capabilities of LinkedIn to showcase your game development projects, prototypes, and portfolio pieces. Include links to your GitHub repositories, personal website, or online portfolio to provide recruiters and hiring managers with easy access to your work - images, videos of gameplay/how the software works all great! 💡Experience: Detail your relevant experience in programming/any roles, internships, or freelance projects. Highlight your contributions to game projects, your technical expertise, and any notable achievements or challenges overcome during your roles. Use concrete examples to illustrate your impact and capabilities - I cannot stress how important this is. Just adding the company and job title is NOT enough most of the time 💡Engage/Connect: Actively engage with the community on LinkedIn by participating in discussions, sharing insights, and connecting with industry professionals, recruiters and other programmers/artists. Join relevant groups, follow influencers, and contribute valuable content to establish yourself in the field and gain more exposure. You never know when an opportunity will arise from this 💡Recommendations: Request recommendations from colleagues, mentors, or supervisors who can attest to your skills, work ethic, and contributions. Authentic endorsements from credible sources add credibility to your profile and strengthen your professional reputation 🚀 By implementing these optimization strategies, you'll enhance your visibility, credibility, and attractiveness to potential employers and collaborators in the field #GameDev #LinkedInTips #ProfileOptimization #GamingIndustry #CareerAdvice #Programmers #GameDev #Artists #Coders #Games #SoftwareEngineering #CareerTips #LinkedInTips

This took me 10 years to learn, I’ll teach it to you in 5 minutes. Stop trying to hire the “most experienced” gameplay programmers focus on these qualities instead 👇 After a decade in game development ↳ I understand the pain points of game studios. ↳ I know what makes a great gameplay programmer. ↳ I spent 10 years building games from the ground up. And 3 years helping others build efficient game teams ↳ I now help studios find top-notch remote game developers. ↳ I ensure they fit perfectly into your teams. I realized chasing candidates with the longest resumes is the wrong formula. With focus on years of experience you risk missing other valuable traits Here's what to look for when hiring gameplay programmers: 1. Technical Skills: Proficiency in C++ and/or C#, experience with Unity or Unreal, knowledge of 3D math and physics, and familiarity with version control systems. 2. Problem-Solving Abilities: Analytical thinking, performance optimization, and strong debugging skills. 3. Game Design Understanding: Knowledge of game mechanics, player psychology, and the ability to create engaging gameplay. 4. Collaboration Skills: Strong communication, teamwork, and receptiveness to feedback. 5. Passion for Games: Up-to-date with industry trends, personal game projects, and participation in game jams or hackathons. 6. Relevant experience: Previous work on similar games, experience from similar sized projects, knowledge of the tools to use The right mix of these qualities will get you a gameplay programmer who will hit the ground running Building great game teams isn’t easy. The good news: You can nail it. Focus on the right type of experience. PS what do you look for in your gameplay programmers? ♻️ Reshare if you think years of experience isn't the best way to measure someone's value. If you are struggling to find the right people for your team, follow me for getting my best tips

Hi my network! As a new entry level 2D game dev I've noticed that it's really hard to get a position anywhere. On several occasions I've seen less than a handfull of positions available within the artist category suited for newcommers and it got my thoughts spinning for a bit. I have three questions for employers and for anyone that wants to voice their opinion on this; 1. What type of application is preferable for an entry level game dev seeking to get a foot in? Why do you prefer that type of job listing (this is a perfect scenario and of course it always depends on what the game and company needs)? -Would you choose to list an unpaid internship? -Would you list an entry level position? -Would you only choose to list a position just meant for more experienced game devs? I/We prefer open applications for entry level game devs -I/We prefer to list another job position 2. What can entry level game devs do in order to stay relevant and attractive on the jobmarket? I am interested to hear about what employers are looking out for when an application and portfolio is being viewed and what things should be avoided. 3. Not everybody fits the cookie cutter. I am going to paint up an application scenario (the person and scenario is made up and not based on real life, it only suggest a general view of a possible scenario); Cathrine (young adult, female) has just got a degree as a game development artist. She has no prior experience but want to get a job as a game developer. She has shipped a demo while studying, her portfolio is stable and attractive enough to spark interest and the job position she applied for was a paid entry level job. In the interview she mentions that she works a bit different than some and has a prior diagnose on the spectrum and can only work 30 hours a week. She might not be a perfect candidate fitting the cutter fully, but in the long run she might contribute by other means to the company and or team that might make her stay as an ideal hireable candidate and colleague. Would you hire her? If not, why not? Thank you for stopping by and reading my long post. I hope everybody that stops by have a nice day.
