From the sweeping savannas of the Serengeti to the historical depths of the Pyramids of Giza, African World Heritage sites are not just relics of the past; they are vital to our present and future. In an era dominated by urgent issues such as food security, climate change, and regional conflicts, these sites serve as reminders of the resilience and creativity of human civilizations. They stand as testaments to the ingenuity and adaptability of the African people, offering invaluable insights into sustainable living and community cohesion that the world desperately needs today. Preserving these heritage sites goes beyond conservation—it's about dignifying the people connected to these lands. It involves recognizing their rights and roles as custodians of their history, and integrating their traditional knowledge and practices in contemporary solutions to global challenges. This localized approach ensures that strategies are not only effective but also respectful of the socio-cultural dynamics. I witnessed this directly working with incredible local communities across the Great Lakes region, West Africa, the Sahel and North Africa for over a decade. Moreover, protecting African World Heritage sites helps to foster a sense of identity and continuity, which is crucial in regions marred by conflict. These places offer a source of pride and unity, strengthening community bonds and promoting peace. As UNESCO highlights the theme of African World Heritage in 2024, let us recommit to these treasures of humanity. Let us support efforts that empower local communities, enhance resilience, and ensure that heritage conservation is a cornerstone in our response to global challenges. World Africa Day !! On this World Africa Day, we come together to celebrate the rich diversity, vibrant cultures, and immense potential of the African continent. As we reflect on the significant progress made and the ongoing challenges faced, let us recommit ourselves to fostering greater unity, equity, and prosperity across Africa. Africa is a land of boundless beauty, teeming with natural wonders, from the sweeping savannas to the lush rainforests, and the snow-capped peaks to the sun-drenched coasts. It's people are resilient, innovative, and fiercely proud of their heritage. Yet, the continent still grapples with the legacies of colonialism, uneven development, and a range of socioeconomic and environmental issues. On this day, let us celebrate the African Union's vision of "An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena." Together, we must work to realize this vision by: Promoting Sustainable Development Investing in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and infrastructure that uplifts communities while preserving the continent's delicate ecosystems 🐆🐆🦁🦏🥰🦓

📌Africa Grants: The Projects Islamic Heritage in Northern Ghana is one of the first projects to receive a HERITΛGE Grant for Africa. The project aims to restore three old mosques, products of the long-distance trade networks that once existed in Northern Ghana. Located along the old trade routes, there are ten remaining mosques in the region, all facing challenges posed by modernization, arabization, and climate change. “We are already seeing the effect the grant is having in transforming these valuable heritage resources for the community,” says Dr. Mahmoud Malik Saako of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board who manages the project. “The mosques are tangible evidence of the material culture and history of northern Ghana and are part of the valuable heritage resources of local communities. The communities realize the need to restore them as part of their culture and history and to develop ecotourism around them. Their preservation will go a long way to pave the way for their eventual inscription onto the World Monuments List,” Dr. Mahmoud explains. HERITΛGE’s Grants for Africa are generously supported by the Mellon Foundation’s Humanities in Place program.
