*All opinions are my own: First of all, let’s send our congrats and best to Becky for the new position and supporting the patients in this underserved area. She is stepping up and doing what no family doctor would do for the obviously meagre pay she’s getting. What stuck out to me though, is this: “The thing that I like about a nurse practitioner lead model, is that because we don’t bill OHIP, our pay isn’t necessarily related to how many patients we see.” It’s not the first time I’ve heard that - as I’m sure we all have heard that exact same line since our “Roles and Responsibilities” interview assignment in NP school. We’re indoctrinated to virtue-signal and consider it acceptable, and even feel PROUD to be paid less than many RNs for the same responsibility and liability as a family doctor. There has to be a solution to be able to support patients at an ethical level and support the best outcomes while also being able to own our own clinics and bill OHIP. Otherwise we’re always going to be subservient, dependent employees of a system that considers us disposable. At a time when we’re privatizing to increase access to care, let me remind my fellow NPs that you deserve more than $125k which is the upper quartile of salaries in our profession. I know NPs still making $95k at family health teams in Ontario, while the doctors take more patients and heavily boost their salaries. Please remember there’s a reason why physicians have been extremely hush hush (for decades) about their billing practices - and all we hear is their grumbling about their lifestyle doing paperwork and paying overhead, day in and day out. It’s because they are making over double what we are - take home. They also have way better protection in case their license is on the line. It’s clear we’re being told that we should be grateful for what we’re given and not to complain, when I’m sorry but it’s not enough. Don’t play yourself fellow NPs. Know your worth.
