The Netherlands is big on biking AND has lots of water. So why are the Dutch canals not buzzing with these hydrofoils bikes? Well the first reason is obvious, as a Dutchmen I know too well we are very cost conscious - let's call it cheap. It will be hard to compete with inexpensive city bikes. But there is more. One of the reasons biking works so well in the Netherlands is the biking infrastructure. From free standing bike paths, to underground parking close to train stations the Netherlands is designed for biking. For this water bike to take off, we need to create something similar: Biking lines in canals, places to park your bike safely and get on dry land and perhaps even showers to change in a work outfit. As cities get more compact with less cars, this may well be the future. What do you think? #regeneration #circulareconomy #biking

Right turn on red, the Dutch way. In the Netherlands, cars can't turn right on red, but cyclists often do. Dutch bicycle intersections are designed for easy right turns, away from car traffic. Designing a great cycling city involves numerous small details that enhance the experience of moving on two wheels. An important feature is to reduce unnecessary stops for people on bikes. Starting from a complete stop takes much energy for cyclists. Allowing right turns on red is one more method to keep cyclists moving. Ps. Not every Dutch intersection has protected infrastructure, but even then, cyclists are sometimes allowed to turn on red. This is when the sign 'Rechtsaf voor fietsers vrij' is placed.

🚴♂️ Bicycle Escalators in Trondheim, Norway 🚴♀️ Trondheim's bicycle escalators are a brilliant testament to the city’s innovative approach to urban cycling. Nestled on the slopes of the hill Brubakken, Trondheim presents a unique challenge for cyclists due to its steep inclines. In 1993, Trondheim became the world’s first city to install bicycle lifts, revolutionizing how locals navigate the hilly terrain. These lifts have effortlessly assisted over 200,000 cyclists in conquering the 130-meter ascent, boasting an impeccable safety record with no accidents reported. This infrastructure reflects Trondheim’s commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and making cycling more accessible. It's a remarkable example of how thoughtful urban planning can profoundly impact everyday life. 🌟 Why We Love It: ✅ Innovation at its Best: The bicycle escalators are a unique and practical solution to a common urban challenge. ✅ Sustainability: Encourages the use of bicycles over cars, promoting a greener lifestyle. ✅ Safety First: With no reported accidents, the lifts are as safe as they are efficient. Do you think this is cool? I took this picture of pedestrians and cyclists crossing at a signal just a 3-minute walk from my house. Did you know: Japan has over 200,000 traffic signals. 16 % of all trips in Japan are by bicycle , and over 20% are on foot in Urban Areas. Pedestrians and cyclists often have priority at intersections. Japan has one of the world’s lowest road fatality rates, with fewer than 3 deaths per 100,000 people. Strict rules ensure cycling is safe and efficient, like no drunk cycling and shared sidewalks. Japan is a model for safe and sustainable urban mobility!
