Did you know that that the experimental TeraByte InfraRed Delivery (TBIRD) system, a groundbreaking collaboration between NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and MIT Lincoln Laboratory , set a Guinness World Records ?    On April 28, 2023, TBIRD achieved the fastest data connection between a satellite in orbit and a ground station, downlinking an astonishing 4.8 terabytes of error-free data in just 4 minutes and 57 seconds. The #Earth’s inner orbit is so polluted with ageing space assets and #debris that it could hinder access to space for future generations, a prediction made by a NASA scientist Donald Kessler in the 1970’s. NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment has achieved a significant milestone by achieving “first light,” successfully transmitting and receiving data to and from beyond the Moon using a near-infrared laser. The experiment, part of the Psyche spacecraft, employed a laser transceiver to send and receive signals over a distance of nearly 10 million miles, surpassing the Moon-Earth distance by about 40 times. This achievement represents a breakthrough in high-bandwidth data transmission, essential for future space missions, including potential human exploration of Mars. Did you see NASA beamed back a cat video via laser from 19 million miles away?! Laser frequencies can be 100,000x higher than radio wave frequencies. This means that by beaming data via lasers, we can transit far more information per second than beaming via radio waves. There are many space missions we still haven’t gotten all the data from because bandwidth is much more limited via RF communications. While we would still have the time delay between planets or spacecraft traveling through deep space (because we haven’t figured out how to travel faster than the speed of light), those missions would be able to send data to Earth immediately upon collection of said data. NASA just hit a big win with its Psyche spacecraft's Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment. They managed to shoot data a whopping 140 million miles through space at a blazing 25 megabits per second (Mbps). The DSOC module, all snugly integrated with the spacecraft's radio frequency transmitter, pulled off the feat of beaming engineering data back to Earth on April 8th. Even though Psyche is rocking the traditional radio tech for now, DSOC is a game-changer in speed.
