Interesting round table earlier at #UtopianHours in Torino on real estate challenges in cities like Turin and Glasgow. Turns out, the real estate landscape in both cities is pretty comparable. Both cities face strikingly similar issues: the financials are tough to make stack up, and attracting investment can be challenging. Public and private sectors often work in silos, which slows progress. That said, student accommodation is a bright spot, standing out as an attractive investment option in both cities. Also, not a spot of negative connotation on this side of the pond. However, there are key differences: Turin has an ageing population, while Glasgow is seeing more young people enter the workforce. Glasgow is also further ahead in the de-industrialisation process, offering more work opportunities as it transforms its economy. So, what’s being done? In Glasgow, the newly formed development team Mandy MacDonald is stepping up to close the gap between public and private sectors, aligning policies, listening to the market, and unlocking new opportunities for investment together with Invest Glasgow. This collaborative approach is crucial to creating a positive narrative and building excitement around the city’s future.
