As part of "Webinars and lectures for architects" organized by VELUX, my colleague Jože Hafner and I discussed the topic of daylight from various perspectives today. Webinar 16 - Daylight in Regulations - PURES-3 and design tools, focuses on the link between daylight and the current Energy Efficiency Regulations in Slovenia. It outlines the legislation that is directly and indirectly related to natural light. Daylight factor (FDS), large glazing in modern buildings and the problem of overheating in winter, the hourly method introduced by PURES-3 for energy-demanding buildings and the advantages of calculating with BIM tools (in our case CYPEthermal for thermal comfort and CYPElux for light by Cype Software) were discussed more in detail. Together with Katja Malovrh Rebec we are working on a scientifically in-depth comparison between the hourly and monthly methods, which will be published in autumn. Thanks, Neza Mocnik for the invitation and the excelent summary of an increasingly relevant topic in the built environment. And thanks again for your contribution to the conference "Light and Human-Centric Buildings in the Digital Age" hosted by Zavod za gradbeništvo Slovenije - Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute on Tuesday. #daylight #light #BIM #hourlymethod #daylightfactor #buildingphysics ℹ The webinar is available on the link below.

As professionals, this event teaches us that redundancy, attention to detail, and accountability are non-negotiable in engineering. It also highlights the necessity for continuous professional development to stay aligned with evolving codes and practices. The lessons from Hyatt must drive our commitment to integrity and excellence, ensuring we build not just structures but trust and safety for the communities we serve.
🔗 The Hyatt Regency bridge collapse remains a pivotal case in structural engineering, highlighting the devastating impact of design flaws and communication failures. This tragic event serves as a critical reminder of the importance of rigorous design reviews, ethical responsibility, and redundancy in structural systems. This article explores the causes of the collapse, examines the legal and professional aftermath, and outlines essential lessons for engineers to prevent similar disasters. 👉 Read the full article here: [https://lnkd.in/dFY3_x5u] #HyattRegencyBridgeCollapse #StructuralEngineering #EngineeringFailures #EthicalEngineering #ConstructionSafety #LessonsLearned

I found this interview with my colleague, Peter Ruggiero, in The Wall Street Journal really interesting. He talks about designing airports that are intuitive, calming, and enjoyable. He also discusses rethinking how these spaces function to serve a growing number of travelers. This past year, I’ve had the opportunity to work on my first aviation project, with HOK, at Dallas Fort Worth Airport. It has been fascinating learning about the complexities of airport design and operations. Check out the interview with Peter below! #AviationDesign #AirportInnovation #HOK

Fun Tales of Chinese Design: Episode3: The Evolution of Railways - From Qin Dynasty Wooden Tracks to Cross-Sea High-Speed Rail Hi everyone, I’m Shirley Feng! Welcome to my channel! Did you know that over 2,200 years ago, the Qin Dynasty had wooden tracks resembling modern railways? They even used horse-drawn trains for transportation! And today, we’re crossing mountains and seas on China’s Fuzhou-Xiamen High-Speed Railway, turning dreams into reality. In this video, I’ll take you on a journey through time—from a memorable scene in Let the Bullets Fly, to the Qin Dynasty’s unified tracks, to the groundbreaking achievements of modern railways. Together, we’ll uncover the fascinating history and design ingenuity behind rail transport.#RailwayDesign #QinDynasty #HighSpeedRail #HistoryAndDesign #LetTheBulletsFly ✨ Highlights: · What’s so absurd about the horse-drawn train in Let the Bullets Fly? · How was the Qin Dynasty’s “unified track” policy a design marvel? · Why do some countries use broad gauge while others choose narrow gauge? · How did China’s first cross-sea high-speed railway bring dreams to life? Railways aren’t just about transportation—they’re about the power of design to transform lives. From wooden tracks of the Qin Dynasty to the high-speed trains of today, the brilliance of design continues to inspire our future! Don’t forget to subscribe for more stories about design, history, and innovation!
