👷♂️⚠️ Shifting Perspectives: Health and Safety Officers as Team Players! ⚠️👷♀️ As a safety officer, I've encountered my fair share of resistance from operations managers and facilities managers. Sometimes, I can't help but wonder why anyone would not want their employees to be safe. 🤷 Recently, I introduced myself and my role to someone, and their response was, "Oh, you're the guy nobody likes!" It got me thinking, how do you respond to that? But here's the thing: we health and safety officers aren't the "fun police" or the "job stoppers" – far from it! We're part of the team, working alongside you to ensure that everyone goes home safe and sound at the end of the day. 🛠️🔒 Our goal isn't to make your life difficult or put up roadblocks to productivity. It's quite the opposite! By identifying and mitigating risks, providing training and resources, and promoting a safety-first mindset, we're actually paving the way for smoother operations and greater success. 💪✨ So, let's reframe the narrative: health and safety officers aren't obstacles to overcome – we're your allies, your advocates, and your partners in safety. Together, we can create a workplace where everyone feels empowered to speak up, take action, and make safety a top priority. 🌟 Moreover, as Health and Safety professionals, it's time to shift away from finding reasons why a project cannot proceed to finding ways to help processes or projects run smoother with fewer disruptions due to health and safety incidents. Let's focus on improving processes to provide a safer environment for all. I'm reminded of a fellow safety officer who once bragged about shutting down projects so many projects. It made me realize that we need to shift our focus to proactive safety measures that enhance productivity rather than hinder it. A better brag would be how projects have run smoothly due to your input and contributions. If we position ourselves as essential contributors to projects, ensuring everyone gets home safe, rather than mere cogs in the wheel of progress, perhaps we'll encounter less resistance and foster a more collaborative environment. I invite you to share your thoughts, experiences, or ideas for improving safety together in the comments below. Let's work together to build a safer, healthier, and happier workplace for all! #SafetyFirst #TeamWork #WorkplaceSafety #HealthAndSafety #SafetyCulture

I help Health and Safety professionals progress their careers and support organisations in finding the best talent | Experienced Recruiter
When hiring a Health and Safety professional, I'd encourage hiring managers not to set a minimum amount of years experience that is required. "You must have 3+ years experience in a dedicated safety role" Why? Safety roles aren't equal. I've met candidates with 2 years' experience that have better experience than that of someone with 5 years' experience. It all depends on what they've been doing for those 2 years. Likewise, a lot of safety professionals have had careers before moving into dedicated safety roles. Many of these people have had safety as part of their role, for example in an operations type role. Instead, focus on the skills the candidate must have and their experience in performing the duties required for the role. Worry less about the years they've had in the game. #healthandsafety #hserecruitment #acquaintedtalent
