The interface shown below is pretty slick. Does that make the system safe to use? On its own? No. UX tackles sales, self-service, software, and critical systems. All of them are important, and each is very different. Few practitioners are good at more than one of them. HCI* and human factors have robust methods and tools for keeping tech users and everyone else safe. Why firms do not use this knowledge is beyond me. There is a good chance that they’ve hired teams who *simply do not know* much about human factors. * Human-Computer Interaction

The new legislation will require autonomous vehicles to achieve a safety level comparable to that of careful and competent human drivers. As autonomous vehicles become an increasing presence on Washington’s roadways, the number of collisions involving self-driving cars is bound to rise.
