The challenge of achieving gender equality is a monumental one, but we must continue to strive towards it. According to some measures, it will take 131 years to reach full parity globally. That's why it's essential to have strong leaders who can advocate for change and outline a vision for achieving gender parity. Stephanie Copus Campbell, Australia's Ambassador for Gender Equality, is one such leader who is well placed to do just that. Recently, NFAW celebrated the annual Pamela Denoon Lecture, where Stephanie Copus Campbell gave the keynote address. and inspired all attending with her brilliance, passion and vision for leadership on gender equality within the Australian Government and multilateral organizations. Prior to her current role, Stephanie Copus Campbell worked across the public, private and philanthropic sectors, including as a founding Director on the Femili PNG Board providing services to family and sexual violence survivors. If you were not able to attend this evening you can watch the keynote address here; https://lnkd.in/gYSrZnCM The Pamela Denoon Lecture is a partnership between the Denoon Family, the National Foundation for Australian Women, and the ANU Gender Institute. Achieving gender parity will take a community, and we're excited to hear Stephanie Copus Campbell's insights on how we can all work together to make it happen. NFAW thank the Denoon family for their years of support in honour of Pamela Denoon one of our early trailblazers on gender equality here in Australia.

A recent study published in Human Resource Management (HRM) examined how subsidiaries of multinational enterprises (MNEs) manage the tension between a host country context characterised by religious dogma and unsupportive laws, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) policies mandated by their headquarters. The study introduces the concept of covert allyship and provides implications for human resource management in MNEs. "Positively, the men’s movement emphasized the need for men to get in touch with their feelings, to talk with other men. Negatively, the men’s movement continued to promote patriarchy by a tacit insistence that in order to be fully self-actualized, men needed to separate from women. The idea that men needed to separate from women to find their true selves just seemed like the old patriarchal message dressed up in a new package." – bell hooks, The Will to Change (2003) An upcoming men's conference I won't link to lacks representation of women, mothers, and trans/nonbinary individuals men are in relationship with in their families, workplaces, and communities. In 2023, I believe we should not have a conversation about masculinity without considering the voices of people of other genders impacted by our collective ideas of what it means to 'be a man'. While gender-specific spaces have their merit, they should include the perspectives of others to avoid navel-gazing and expand our locus of concern for others' experiences within patriarchy. New special issue of the Journal of Historical Pragmatics: Corpus-Pragmatic Studies of Democratization in Public Discourses: New perspectives, methods and materials. I had the privilege to co-edit this issue with Turo Hiltunen and Turo Vartiainen. The issue includes papers studying democratization using methods of corpus-pragmatics. I co-authored a paper dealing with activist speeches and how in-groups and out-groups are constructed in them. We found out that activist speeches creatively use pronouns to create these groups. For instance, activists can either speak as one of those for whom they are speaking or place themselves outside that group. Also, we noticed that activist speeches show a trend towards a more generic engagement, as the more recent speeches (e.g. on climate change and LGBTQ+ rights) were not as focused on creating us vs them dichotomies as the earlier speeches (e.g. on women's rights and civil rights). https://lnkd.in/eMK-dxjw

This list is so limited -- think of the women who developed the computers and software during WWII, the woman who wrote SINGLE HANDEDLY all the code for Apollo 11-- the list could go on and on... Yet, for reasons that I find difficult to understand the reluctance of venture capitalists to fund early stage companies founded by women-- especially in Japan. The reasons they give are laughable and so amazingly sexist-- and they are so unaware of their sexism. Now any investor knows that when irrational market dislocations occur (and this is certainly the case here) it is the perfect opportunity to MAKE MONEY. Thus looking at women founders isn't merely good social policy -- it is smart business. Tachi-Aoi helps such women investors in Japan start their companies-- come along with us!
