Never underestimate the value of coaching. The word "Coach" originates centuries ago, referring to a horse and carriage. A tool to GUIDE you from Point A to Point B. Today, the meaning extends far beyond transportation. A coach is someone who guides individuals and teams along their journeys, pushing them to reach their highest potential. On #NationalCoachesDay, I'm reflecting on one of the greatest to ever do it—Chuck Noll, the legendary coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Noll transformed the team from a struggling franchise into a dynasty, winning four Super Bowls in six years. He wasn't just a coach; he was a teacher, a leader who believed in building a foundation of excellence and discipline. Noll once said, "The single most important thing we had in the Steelers of the '70s was the ability to work together. You can get so much more done when you work together as a team." His approach to coaching transcended X's and O's—he inspired his players to grow not only as athletes but as individuals. Great coaches don't just show you the path; they walk with you, helping you navigate every obstacle and celebrate every win. As a life-long resident of Michigan, I have to say there is something to Dan Campbell. It cannot be ignored, believe me, I tried. I am a Tampa Bay Bucs fan myself. However, Dan has a massive amount of passion for turning what was truly a joke of a team (I am being brutally honest) into something that we (as Michigan Residents) can truly be proud of! The sheer grit, passion, and intensity that he and Brad Holmes have is undeniable. Their dedication to this team is without question remarkable. Putting a team together takes a lot of thought, conversation, and the ability to look ahead. How might this individual be right for the team? Does this individual fit our culture? Will they bring positivity to the team? How will things look after the first year, or even two? These are all important and extremely relevant to our professional lives - even outside of sports. Kudos to Dan and Brad for what they have done. As a Husky fan, I've been unusually invested in the College Football Playoffs. I was watching Coach Saban speak after their loss to Michigan, and I could feel his heartbreak as if it was my own, probably because I've felt that heartbreak for my own athletes over the years. In it, he says how proud he is of his program, his players, and what they've overcome. He finishes with "I just wish I could have done more as a coach to, you know, help them be successful and help them finish and all we can do now is learn from the lessons that uh sometimes failings bring to us." In this ONE MINUTE of interview, we learn a lot about being a leader: -The blessing and curse of being a leader is that we are ultimately the person in control of the success of our team. -Sometimes the dream team isn't able to deliver what you'd hoped. There's a lot to be learned in those moments. -Praising publicly (as taught to me by Proactive Coaching, LLC) goes a long way. It breeds confidence for future projects/games/outcomes. Whether or not you like Bama or football, Saban's actions speak volumes to the type of leader he is and will continue to be. Never count out the underdog - especially when they’re making a comeback This past weekend wasn’t just a win for the Huskies - it was a defining moment for Northern Illinois University. For the first time in its history, NIU defeated a top-10 team, defeating No. 5 Notre Dame in their own stadium. The Huskies were 28-point underdogs, and no one expected them to win. But in true Huskies fashion, they showed that resilience, preparation, and teamwork can defy even the toughest odds. NIU has long been a Mid-American Conference (MAC) powerhouse, but recent years have been tough. When Coach Thomas Hammock - a former NIU running back - returned in 2019, the team struggled, including a winless 2020 season. However, Hammock rebuilt the program with resilience and determination. By 2021, they claimed the MAC Championship, and in 2023, won their first bowl game in over a decade. Now, their upset of Notre Dame shows the underdog can rise again This Boneyard Victory - a term for NIU’s wins over power five conference opponents - was earned through grit and relentless effort, not luck. As Coach Hammock emphasized, “We didn’t need luck; we just needed to play our best.” He called it a program-changing win, a milestone that proves what belief, hard work, and unity can achieve. As an NIU PhD graduate and long-time fan, this victory hit home for me in more ways than one: At Intel, we too are on a journey to reclaim our leadership and prove ourselves once again. Like NIU, we have a legacy of excellence, and we’re meeting challenges that require resilience, innovation, and belief in ourselves. Coach Hammock’s story is a powerful reminder that the best victories are hard earned through perseverance, teamwork, and the refusal to give up. Watching him in this moment and is pride in his team makes me believe that tough battles can be worth it.
