Lee Kuan Yew once said, "I do not know of a man who became a leader as a result of having undergone a leadership course."
What?
Globally, companies spend almost $400 B annually on Leadership Development programs.
That's a lot of money. No one spends at that level unless they expect a return on their investment!
But wait a moment.
According to Leadership Derailment studies, 93% of Leadership Development Programs fail to meet expectations.
What's worse is that 50-67% of new leaders fail.
Is it any wonder why so many people are terrified to step up and lead?
Hiding behind books, coaches, and seminars, many people hope they can be spoon-fed leadership.
It can't!
Billions are squandered annually on leadership training, an exercise that only seems to feed the fear of taking risks.
Many trainers and coaches are peddling wisdom they haven't applied themselves. Failed entrepreneurs, failed managers, armchair leaders who'd instead teach you how to captain a ship than steer one themselves!
Leadership isn't about parroting what you've read or heard.
It's about rolling up your sleeves, stepping into the trenches, making tough decisions, and dealing with the fallout.
We earn the right to talk about leadership by trying, failing, learning, and trying again!
True leadership isn't taught; it's learned in the heat of the moment when you're under fire and have nowhere to hide.
If we want to nurture leaders, we should stop wasting money on pointless training.
Instead, throw them into the deep end.
Inspire them to go for it, then let them swim or sink.
If they need guidance, let them seek it out. They'll value it more when they pay with their blood, sweat, tears, and money from their own pockets.
Let's see who's ready to step up and lead when the going gets tough.
Have you tried to teach leadership to anyone and become frustrated?
What did you do?
