National Mentoring Day is rapidly approaching! It was launched by Chelsey Baker, an award-winning business mentor, to help encourage and celebrate mentoring in all its forms to promote the benefits of mentoring. It is now celebrated worldwide to thank individuals who selflessly mentor across all walks of life and shine a spotlight on mentoring initiatives that are making a difference! While National Mentoring Day is a special day on the calendar, it can also spur us on to think about mentoring and what we can be doing better, as individuals and organizations. Have you got a mentor? The 2024 Mentoring Impact Report published in March shows that “the number of US Fortune 500 companies offering visible mentoring programs has reached 98%” and interestingly that “Median profits for US Fortune 500 companies with mentoring programs were twice that of those without mentoring”. This evidence suggests mentoring is good for business and companies with mentoring programs are more profitable. Reflecting on my Role as Project Director for the FCMB Sheventures Mentoring Programme It has been a delight and a refreshing experience as I take a moment to reflect on my role as the Project Director for the FCMB Sheventures Mentoring Programme, Cohort 11. I am filled with a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment, and gratitude for the opportunity. This program, designed to empower women entrepreneurs, has been a testament to the power of mentorship, collaboration, and resilience. Over the past weeks, we’ve worked tirelessly to develop a robust curriculum addressing critical business management and leadership challenges in Strategic Management, Financial Management, Operations, Sales and Marketing, and Human Resources. From creating diagnostic tools, matching mentors and mentees, organizing masterclasses, engaging book reviews, focus group discussions across sectors, and facilitating onboarding sessions; every step of this journey has been intentional and impactful. The heart of this program lies in the inspiring mentees who bring their aspirations, desires, and determination to grow successful businesses. And, of course, the remarkable mentors whose wealth of experience and commitment to guiding the next generation of entrepreneurs has been awe-inspiring. Leading this project has further reinforced the importance of collaboration, adaptability, impartation, and the sheer joy of seeing others succeed. The occasional challenges, like ensuring seamless communication and managing logistics, only underscored the importance of staying focused on the bigger picture. A special highlight for me was witnessing the power of mentorship in action—how a single conversation or shared experience can spark clarity, confidence, and direction for a mentee. I have been a mentor on several projects, but this was different with an extensive overview. As we wind down, I remain deeply committed to ensuring that every woman in this programme feels equipped and empowered to achieve her aspirations in business and personal growth. I also want to acknowledge the incredible team of masterclass facilitators, mentors, project management office, NECA NNEW NECA's Network of Entrepreneurial Women (NNEW), and FCMB Group First City Monument Bank (FCMB) who have made this possible. Special thanks to my president Adefunke Kuyoro and adviser, Kehinde Victoria Omojola Indeed, whether in business, leadership, or personal development, the value of shared experiences cannot be overstated. Mentorship is one of the more effective ways of growing as a professional and as a leader. Nomzamo Radebe, Chief Operating Officer of SA Corporate Real Estate Fund said whether in a career setting, academic environment, or personal development context, effective mentorship can be a transformative experience, enriching both the mentor and mentee through collaboration and shared learning. She said mentors may change as one transitions through life. To identify a suitable mentor, it is important to identify the objectives that one wishes to achieve through mentorship. One can approach a mentor directly and joining a mentorship program that seeks to match mentors and mentees may be helpful. It is also important to remain open minded that a mentor may present himself/herself unexpectedly. In her career spanning over 25 years, Nomzamo has benefitted from mentors who have provided guidance, support, and wisdom. She says mentorship could happen in a formal setting or it could be the impact of once-off discussions with certain individuals that will have an influence over a lifetime. Nomzamo has found these crucial conversations to be lasting ‘nuggets’ of wisdom to refer to as she formulates approaches to life. A seasoned executive and businesswoman, Nomzamo was the Chief Executive Officer of Excellerate JHI before joining SA Corporate. The 2023/4 Business in the Community #COMC Mentoring programme has just closed and I wanted to share here some reflections in case it’s something that you or your organisation can support. The programme is designed for People of Colour across a range of different sectors (public & private sector, charity & corporate). Your organisation puts forward some mentors to lead a mentoring circle. In return the company can also send some people of colour within their organisation to be mentees with other mentoring circles. I’d never been part of a Mentoring Circle before and as a lead mentor I was slightly bricking it before last year’s opener but I can honestly say that after 2 cohorts, this is the most rewarding and impactful programme that I’ve mentored on. I facilitated a group of 6 smart, talented mentees through monthly sessions where we discussed themes like :- Personal Development, Executive Presence, Heritage (my favourite session) and others. This group of young, brilliant future stars taught me a LOT and our discussions threw up loads of great learnings, practical tips and boosted confidence. We ended up with a great set of notes (thanks Manasse) which I have already returned to as a guide for working life. These are the brilliant future stars I was lucky enough to learn with, thank you!
