In Churchu, Jharkhand, migration isn't viewed as a crisis but as an opportunity and solution. Especially for Churchu's adivasi families.   When men migrate to larger cities, women seek work as construction workers in nearby districts or closer to their hometowns, continuing caregiving roles. But there is a lesser-known story that often goes unnoticed and Neelam Besra tells it best, the journey of young girls or "घर की लड़कियां" left behind as their families seek livelihood opportunities elsewhere. For girls in Churchu, the days begin much earlier, tending to younger siblings and taking on household chores. After household work, attending school isn't always easy; some walk up to 15 kilometers or rely on bicycles, as the remote location has only one high school. For those fortunate enough to reach high school, the path to further education becomes even more challenging. Especially for those aspiring to attend college, located 35 kilometers away. As a result, many of them drop out and end up getting married at a younger age. Proximate leader Neelam Besra, the daughter of a single mother who faced similar challenges to the girls of Churchu, at a young age is helping shorten this distance for Churchu's girls.   Early in life, Neelam took a different path, working as a daily wage earner for a long time before eventually securing her first funding opportunity for her non-profit Jharkhand Mahila Uthan. Neelam has partnered with 12 panchayats (local bodies at villages), trained 110 women participants and increased their participation in local decision-making. Pratham Australia fundraises for Pratham Education Foundation’s Second Chance program to bring these Indian girls back into the education system across various states in India. The process will start by mobilizers walking around this month in the local villages, convincing parents and communities of the value of returning their girls to high school studies. Once we achieve that, these donations will help the 40 girls prepare and complete their high school studies over a 12-18 month timeframe. They will also strengthen their soft skills, gain employment and step into a brighter future. Research shows that educating females lifts their whole community up.
