Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Neil Gray, visited our contact centre in South Queensferry yesterday to find out more about NHS 24's preparations for the busy festive period. Expressing his gratitude to staff for their commitment to delivering vital services during challenging times, Mr Gray said, “The festive season is always a challenging time for health and care services, and the incredible teams at NHS 24 are rising to meet this challenge head-on. I want to personally thank all staff for their hard work and dedication, especially at this time of year. “I also encourage the public to use resources like NHS inform’s online tools to ensure that our services can focus on those who need urgent care. The Scottish Government has committed an additional £25 million to winter resilience across NHS Scotland, helping to support these critical efforts.” Ahead of the Christmas and New Year period, NHS 24 has been working proactively to bolster resilience and alleviate pressure on both the 111 service and other primary care resources. NHS 24 has implemented a range of initiatives to prepare for the festive period, including: 🔹Launching a winter campaign focused on digital information and encouraging people to prepare ahead of service closures. 🔹Recruiting a record number of call handlers and additional clinical supervisors to strengthen capacity. 🔹Prioritising frontline services, including suspending non-essential activities within call centres and managing staff annual leave to maximise availability. The first week of the year saw some intense pressure build up on NHS frontline services. An increase in respiratory related conditions, due to the cold weather, led to increased attendances and Acute Hospitals were at capacity. As always, our NHS colleagues continued to deliver care to the best of their abilities. There have been pockets of encouraging messages coming out from the government, notably an aim to shift performance by empowering staff and local teams, as opposed to just top-down management—a message we support. The question is, how? Under continued pressure and scrutiny, with plans for elective recovery taking precedent, whilst urgent & emergency care services continue to be hit, how can we empower the workforce to own and deliver change whilst re-building resilience in teams? The headspace is often the missing piece. The ideas and many of the answers exist amongst frontline staff, but they don't have the capacity to develop and deliver them. It's something we're dedicated to supporting and believe can be a crucial part of the solution. More on this coming in our new blog at the end of January at www.prismimprovement.com #NHS #Healthcare #FrontlineWorkers #HealthServices #Empowerment #ResilienceInHealthcare #PatientCare #HospitalCapacity

This piece from The Times's Chris Smyth is a stark reminder of the need for more support for NHS and #socialcare teams. Volunteers can't solve all the challenges in #health and #care, but they are and should be part of the solutions. #delayeddischarge costs an estimated £900 million a year, but there are multiple causes behind this healthcare challenge, not least: - A decrease of available social care provision and support for patients ready to be discharged into community care - Recruitment and retention churn within the health service leading to experienced staff leaving and less-experienced staff taking on more work - An ageing population with multiple needs The situation sounds grim, but there are solutions! One of which involves utilising volunteer services to help support health and care staff in ensuring patients are able to leave hospital when ready. Volunteers at hospitals including Barts Health NHS Trust support discharge teams by fetching To-Take-Away (TTA) medication from hospital pharmacies, allowing nursing staff more time to care and prepare patients ready to leave. Our evaluations have revealed that volunteer support can speed up patient discharge by up to 44 minutes! This week in Westminster, Wes Streeting delivered what can only be described as a dose of reality: the #NHS is crumbling faster than anyone can say “reform or die.” 🎭 I’m optimistic though that maybe the NHS’s luck is turning, with the Labour government promising to give it the care it needs and fix the mess that they inherited. Lord Darzi’s review? The long awaited, and somewhat unsurprising report found that: waiting times are sky-high, staff are drained, and hospital productivity is lower than ever. The NHS is struggling, and everyone’s sick of being, well, sick. But fear not! Streeting is here with solutions! 🛠️ 1. Move from analogue to digital: No one would deny that a full digital overhaul of the NHS would be hugely beneficial and efficient. But if I were a betting woman, I wouldn’t wager on NHS tech working smoothly on any given day. Let alone the huge investment and administrative burden that would be needed to get this set up!🤖 2. Hospital to community care: Less queuing in hospitals, more care in your local GP. While there’s promise in shifting support to where people already are, community care is already struggling. Much more will need to be strengthened locally to make this work. 👩⚕️ 3. From sickness to prevention: Turns out, the best way to fix the NHS is to make sure you don’t need it. Genius! So, let’s prevent illness altogether (finally!) by tackling things like unhealthy lifestyles. Not a new tactic, but certainly one that is long overdue a reprioritisation. To be successful though, this will require sufficient support from other departments such as education, and efforts to make healthy eating more cost-effective. 🥗 Next steps? A 10-year plan to outline and address the needs of the NHS. Streeting even joked he’s not going full "nanny state" on us—so feel free to keep eating your cake... for now. 🍰 What does this mean for healthcare comms & public affairs? 💼 Expect a flurry of policy updates, public messaging campaigns, and media scrutiny as reforms roll out. Now is the time for strategic engagement—because the NHS narrative is shifting, and specialists will need to cut through the noise with clear, compelling advocacy. #NHSReform #ReformOrDie (Disclaimer: Sarcasm levels may fluctuate depending on treatment wait times)
