For 1st/2nd Gens, what actions and/or inactions around accessing medical care (or any care) that COULD be perceived as resistance, non-compliance or apathy may actually be rooted in lack of support, lack of access (e.g. cultural, language barriers), fear, intergenerational trauma, limited information around certain options, etc. It's so important to look BEYOND our skin (name of the conference) and BEYOND the surface, the immediate actions to help improve 1st and 2nd generation's access to care. When I get to speak in front of professionals about how Intergenerational Trauma and being in The Repay Cycle™, can show up in different ways for 1st/2nd Gens it makes me excited. I am excited to see what we can do to create impact on large and small scales. It was such a great experience discussing ways to strengthen how we can take care of 1st/2nd gens through different lens, and to connect with such great folks with a desire to help others. Thank you @minorityhealthconference for letting me share this amazing space and for such great discussion. Join us for this engaging episode of "Stand Up (for) Doctors!" Supporting doctors; offering hope! Dr Amy-Jo Farrow is an Occupational Health Physician in the U.K., and a burnout coach, helping exhausted doctors thrive. Olivia Morris is the Co-Founder and CEO of Verity Barrington and Doctors Living in Ireland, having been a physician advocate for the past 10 years. We discuss how doctors know about healthy living and what to recommend to their patients, yet they frequently do not take care of themselves in the same way. We dive into some reasons behind that, and how it's almost seen as a "badge of honor" not to take care of one's basic needs during a work shift. That is not sustainable and should not be the culture! We talk about the need to help doctors discover solutions that can be adapted for each physician's unique life. We each share a vulnerable story of how as a physician, a physician's wife, and a healthcare professional, in a time of crisis, how the notion of "the patient always come first," no matter the personal cost, took its toll. Doctors having an identity outside of their primary employment is so important, and can include building a portfolio career, exploring hobbies...whatever brings you joy and gets you energized about life! Message to doctors: Physicians need to practice radical self-compassion. Know that there are options out there, and people who can help you. Never feel like it's just you, it is not, and there is so much support available! Message to patients: If you come across a "grumpy" doctor they may be having a bad day, or missing an important family milestone to be there to care for you. Be compassionate towards another human being, it can make all the difference. Doctors AND patients need to take responsibility to restore the human connection in healthcare! Patient Education is a *critical* link in the chain of healthcare today. Yet, it often remains undervalued within the industry. As my father passed away from Kidney disease they told us to "pick" which comorbidity that we wanted him to preferably pass from (talk about PRESSURE). Proper education would have brought some much needed humanity and dignity into the choices we had to make as a family. I also talk Kidneys over my coffee.....but these two do it much better! #medtech #digitalhealth
☕ Talking Kidneys over Coffee 👉 Why don’t my patients understand what is going on? How do we best educate about #kidney disease? This is a common frustration point for many clinicians in #healthcare. Got a chance to sit down with Tim Fitzpatrick CEO of IKONA Health to discuss this very topic in New York City. They have embraced patient education using a concept called Learning Science, which essentially is the marriage of psychology and neuroscience – understanding how people both learn and forget information. Explaining the complexities of what the kidneys do is not easy, you are addressing diet, electrolytes, fluid intake, multiple medications and possibly even #dialysis. In fact, I believe most patients walk away from a doctor's office more confused, even after being "educated". And yes that french toast was really good 🍞 #medtech #digitalhealth
