🚨The #SuwaSeriya ambulance service, a critical medical service provider for the masses, is struggling to sustain its services due to poor pay, skilled migration, and difficulties in repair and maintenance of its fleet of 322 ambulances. The service, established in 2018 with Indian funding and technical assistance, has brought pre-hospital care to a wide cross-section of the community which could not afford an ambulance before. Today, the service finds over 50 of its 322 ambulances 🚑 out of operation due to repair and staffing issues. According to Suwa Seriya Chairman Dumindra Ratnayaka, the foundation is struggling to replenish its ranks of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and pilots, with 400 vacancies to fill but only 50 ready to join. ❗️Lack of staff to man and trained mechanics to repair ambulances results in fewer vehicles vehicles ready for dispatch ❗️Suwa Seriya has vacancies for 400 staff; several hundred applied, only around 50 keen due to low pay ❗️Many EMTs have left for greener pastures due to better pay overseas ❗️State freeze of recruitment stalled Suwa Seriya attempts to replenish depleted ranks ❗️Govt. pay scales and red tape prevent employees being paid better for their critical services 👇 https://lnkd.in/gMBJkVZ8

70,000 ambulance hours lost at Maelor hospital in the last three years, with each year getting progressively worse. There will be a similar story accross Wales, with one in ten patients suffering a level of harm associated with the ensuing ambulance delays. But, what to do? How to stop the cycle? Let’s start by understanding that Wales has a large and ever increasing older population, with over 21% of our population now over 65. With this growing older population comes opportunities and challenges.. and.. the need for health and social care to innovate and respond to a new era of required community support, which in turn will allow well people to be released from hospitals.. allowing the ambulance service to get to the people who really need them in the correct timeframe. Let’s also improve the support for unpaid carers, the heroes who currently underpin the fabric of society at great loss to themselves.. Let’s improve the pay for staff providing personal care for our loved ones, this is a most important role and crucial to a future world where older people can be supported to live independently for longer. Let’s hope we see the required change in the coming years and an improved world for older people, all of our futures depend on it. In our society, first responders, including paramedics, police, and firefighters, play an important role. Among these, paramedics stand out as vital contributors to the medical services sector, with their significance further magnified during the recent pandemic. Our latest study delves into a comprehensive retrospective analysis spanning a decade (2010-2019) of data from a paramedic agency covering Montreal, Canada. Focused on assessing the road safety of ambulance occupants, the study underscores the need for a preventive policy that specifically targets younger and less experienced paramedics, especially when navigating high-risk locations during emergency calls.  Please see the full version of the study published in the International Journal of Paramedicine (https://lnkd.in/gaU3RCp6). While the primary audience for this research extends to ambulance drivers, we also emphasize the importance of civilian drivers paying attention to the safety of ambulance occupants and their loved ones. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and this study serves as a call to action for collective awareness and vigilance. Understanding when to phone an ambulance, take someone to A&E, or to their GP is a critical decision. Particularly when the NHS is in overwhelm! Ambulances may struggle to get to you as the A&E departments are gridlocked and ambulances are therefore queuing for hours to deliver patients to A&E. Patients are spending many hours on trolleys in A&E or in the back of ambulances, waiting to be seen. The London Ambulance Service is receiving around 82,000 999 emergency calls a day. More than 20,000 higher than 2019. Waiting times for an ambulance routinely exceed the national target of 8 minutes. Even 9 signs that you should urgently call an ambulance as seen on The Hippocratic Post.

⚠️ ** TRIGGER WARNING ** ⚠️ Ambulance Driver... These two words will trigger many EMTs and paramedics across the United States. (International EMS providers, do you experience the same?) In the US, we will be celebrating the 50th National EMS Week this year in May, and yet, many national media outlets, local politicians, and even fellow first responders (police and fire) still refer to us as "Ambulance Drivers." I had the privilege recently to speak with a group of high school students. I was going to do my usual talk, but instead, I asked, "What do you think EMTs and paramedics do?" The very first answer was, "You drive sick people to the hospital." I replied that was only a small portion of what we do and why we are still referred to as "Ambulance Drivers." I would then go on to show and explain the advanced technology we bring to the scene, the identical initial treatment we provide as compared with the emergency department, and the fact that there's typically only 2 of us doing all of this. There were several parents also present at this talk and they came up to me afterwards and were surprised by things like our IO gun and the breadth of our medication administration. They said they never knew and thought all we did was just the old, "You call. We haul. That's all." As EMS leaders, what are we doing to communicate with our fellow health care providers (nurses and docs), fellow first responders (fire and police), and the general public as to what we do and who we are?
