Ashley Ward, director of Duke University's Heat Policy Innovation Hub, took part in this congressional briefing organized by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration last week.

Happy Friday from the Miami-Dade County Office of Resilience! 🥳 This week, our Chief Heat Officer Jane Gilbert was honored to speak on a panel of experts at the 2024 NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Learning Series on Heat/the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) on Capitol Hill for Congressional staffers. The briefing provided congressional staff with information about current and forecasted heat conditions for the U.S., as well as background on how heat impacts human health, workforce productivity, and critical infrastructure in each of their Congressional districts. 🥵 The group discussed legislative priorities related to heat and provided context about local heat risks and resilience strategies through a community-focused panel of speakers including: 🌟 Jainey Bavishi, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Deputy NOAA Administrator 🌟 Juli Trtanj, Director, Climate and Health Program and NIHHIS Executive Director, NOAA 🌟 Hunter Jones, Deputy Director, Climate and Health Program, NOAA 🌟 Jon Gottschalck, Chief, Operational Prediction Branch, Climate Prediction Center, National Weather Service, NOAA 🌟 Jessica Lee, Public Weather Services Program Coordinator, National Weather Service, NOAA 🌟 Aaron Bernstein, Director of the National Center for Environmental Health and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 🌟 Ashley Ward, Director of the Heat Policy Innovation Hub, Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability at Duke University The session wrapped up with an exciting highlight of FY24 priorities for NIHHIS and emphasized the importance of NIHHIS’ role in addressing heat impacts. ✅ Miami-Dade County looks forward to continued partnership with all involved! 🤝 #extremeheat #heatseason #heatsafety #quecalor
