We got the chance to talk Mass Timber at the SDES 63rd Annual Conference last week! We were able to talk about some of the new IBC 2024 code updates, Fire Design with Mass Timber, and some additional considerations to look out for when designing with Mass Timber. If you are curious how you can incorporate Mass Timber on a project, lets chat!
Let's talk mass timber! Not only a visually striking design trend, but a renewable resource supporting sustainable development and diverse uses.
Structural engineers, Matthew Zobel, PE and Nicholas Peterson, PE, dove into the topic at the South Dakota Engineering Society (SDES) Conference. Explore how mass timber can be integrated into your next building project.

Last week, our Engineer and Sustainability Lead, Arij Mroue, had the pleasure of attending the Net Zero Carbon Breakfast Panel hosted by Envision.
The discussion emphasised the critical importance of early collaboration and involvement from designers and contractors in order to drive carbon reduction - something that is also a fundamental part to our Impact//Duty strategy at Jensen Hunt.
It was great to see the upfront cost of carbon reduction discussed so openly across the panel alongside ways in which this can be overcome - something that the industry is yet to address. Another parallel between our strategy and the points raised was the importance of building a culture of incremental change across the work we do - rather than waiting for an opportunity for perfection. It was also inspiring to see the critical role of carbon reduction within the substructure and superstructure package of a project, further strengthening the argument that structural engineers must led the change within the industry for lower carbon design!

A building's structural grid significantly influences its overall carbon impact through the quantity and carbon intensity of the materials used, the construction processes required, and the future adaptability of the structure.
💭 Why is early-stage design optioneering crucial?
The webinar will delve into the significant advantages of early-stage optioneering of the structural grid, showing that early design is the best time for making strategic decisions that can dramatically lower a project's carbon impact. Our experts will guide you through worked examples, showing how nuanced adjustments to structural grids can result in substantial reductions in embodied carbon.

Are you a #developer with a carbon threshold to meet?
Or are you a #designer with a carbon performance to achieve?
Or maybe an #engineer with a carbon budget for the structural system?
Then this 👇 is for you, sign up to the webinar!
Preoptima is the only platform that's been designed to work for all key stakeholders in the construction value chain, to ensure we all look at the same numbers which should be transparent and easy to access. You can't capture embodied carbon any earlier than we do, and that's why designers, developers, engineers, local authorities and consultants are trusting us to achieve the golden carbon thread from design to practical completion.

During the 3rd conference we plan to have as part of session 4 several presentations dealing with more sustainable foundation construction equipment. These presentations should not focus on particular pieces of equipment (which would make them really infomercials), but rather on the approaches to make equipment more sustainable.
As an example, an approach could be to extend the design life so the equipment can be used over a longer period of time, or, to follow the theme of this conference, that it can be reused more frequently.
Are you interested in participating in this session? Then submit your abstract. More information can be found on the conference website www.foundationreuse.com#foundationreuse#deepfoundations#piling#geotechnicalengineering
As coal and fuel oil plants are decommissioned, structures like Battersea in London and Manresa in Connecticut show the potential for practical reuse. This article highlights cooling towers as another example. The key takeaway: rather than tearing down these functional structures, we should focus on repurposing them. If they can serve a new purpose, that’s the path forward.
