Breaking, bboying, bgirling (which in its more commercialized nomenclature has been called breakdancing) after many years of work and advocacy has made it to the Olympics, to debut this summer in Paris. Those who are dancers themselves know the work you have to put in to be at the top is no different than say figure skating or gymnastics. Creativity, technicality, athleticism, flexibility, musicality, originality, you need it all if you want to take home the gold. They interview on the Olympics official Youtube channel bboy Shigekix and bgirl Ayane, who are a brother and sister who both break, and continue to push each other on (bgirl Ayane 40 years old and still bustin' airflare combos). The one thing I loved in the clip is the cut-ins to Shigekix and Ayane training in the dark empty studio by themselves. As the artist getting ready to go to battle, having to fine-tune your craft and invent new moves when everyone else is asleep, that's what we call "hitting the lab". A lotta people don't know breaking is as competitive as other sports or the business world out there, if you don't continue innovating beyond standard vocabulary and combos (akin to say "a standard company product or process"), at the next battle it is probable that someone will come with something fresher and take you out the competition. Breaking has often been an urban thing and in the city streets of the world, it seems more likely for one may draw inspiration to continue onward. There are other places though where one loses inspiration, maybe even suffer from a little depression by the lack of interest in street culture in the surrounding locale. But maybe with breaking in the Olympics, we'll have more families who opt to have children go this route instead of standard extra-curricular activities. I'll know it hit when in the US suburbs when the parents say to their children, "Hey do you want to enroll in baseball or football?" and the children are like, "Nahhhh son, I wanna BREAK, let's cop some fly gear and hit the streets!" 😅 😆
