US Supercore inflation increased 5.0% year-over-year in May, its highest level since April 2023. Supercore inflation is a key metric the Fed follows which includes core services inflation less shelter. Over the last 8 months, it has seen a significant increase from ~3.8% in October. This is despite core CPI inflation declining to 3.4% year-over-year from 3.6% in April and below estimates of 3.5%. Overall, inflation has been above 3% for 38 straight months, the longest streak since the 1990s’ when it lasted for 54 months. The fight against inflation is far from over. IMO inflation could die down over time. However, the FED may not take a chance for now. The latest inflation data provides little urgency for immediate interest rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve, according to financial markets and analysts. While inflation rose in line with expectations, fears of price pressure resurgence eased. 1. Treasury yields cooled off as market awaits key economic data besides assessing the status of the economy. 2. 10-year yield dropped more than 5bps at 4.57%, falling back below the 4.6% level visited on wednesday for the first time in around a month. On the other hand, the policy sensitive 2-year yield slid by more than 4bps to 4.94%. 3. Key economic data due during the week includes Fed’s preferred gauge of infltion - the PCE Index due Friday. 4. In the run-up to that, traders parsed Thursday data that offered some positive news on inflation. Notably, the chain-weighted price index in the updated first-quarter GDP report was revised lower. 5. Various Fed speakers are also due to make remarks on Thursday and Friday. Policymakers have in recent weeks indicated that interest rate cuts may be a while off, with Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari addressing that it could take "many more months of positive inflation data" before he would support rate cuts. 6. As inflation has remained more persistent than anticipated, expectations for interest rate cuts have been pushed back to later in the year and fewer rates cuts than previously expected are now being priced in by markets for 2024. 7. What we read in the policy, we see in the NFP data!

▶️ Play of “Inflation” ▶️ The inside chart of #inflation indicates three stages of Inflation inferred from past 1980’s inflation cycle. 1️⃣Act I is inflation making new highs after excessive easing from the #fed. During #covid when liquidity was pump by fiscal and monetary policy easing. 2️⃣Act II is the premature all clear, with #rates getting cut when it was thought inflation was beaten. 3️⃣Act III is the re-acceleration, when price growth unexpectedly began to climb again. It looks like we are during Act II and that Act III is soon about to begin.
