A Milestone Birthday: Reflecting on My Journey as a Practicing Chartered Accountant This year’s birthday was unlike any I’ve ever celebrated. My phone buzzed nonstop with messages—100 times more than I’ve ever received. It made me feel incredibly supported, but more than that, it reminded me of a personal promise I made to myself a while back: that this birthday, I would celebrate as a Chartered Accountant. And here I am, having fulfilled that promise. It’s been an exciting yet challenging time. As a practicing Chartered Accountant starting from zero, I know the road ahead won’t be easy, especially given my choice to enter the world of practice. This birthday is special, but it also brings with it a lot of tension. Thoughts about how I will navigate this journey as a female CA weigh on my mind. There’s no shortage of people who say that practicing as a female CA is particularly difficult. I chose this path precisely because I disagree with the notion that women should avoid certain types of work simply because they are seen as difficult. It’s this belief that fuels my determination to prove that female Chartered Accountants can not only survive but thrive in practice. So today, as I celebrate this birthday, I’m making another promise to myself. By my next birthday, I will be celebrating a smoother life as a practicing CA. No matter what challenges come my way, I am committed to proving that women, too, can build successful practices. This year was a milestone, and next year will be even better. Here’s to the journey ahead!

How to get into CA practice? A big question! After discussing with more than hundreds of practicing CAs, I observed certain ways to get into the practice. After cracking "Why Practice?" in the last post, I have been talking about "how?" Note before you read further: this post is just the crux of what I have discussed with practicing CAs. Even while answering me on "how?", they told me to look at personal position and decide accordingly. Disclaimer: I am serious about content integrity and staying true to readers. Thus, it can be assured that any content is not produced by AI platforms like ChatGPT. Here's the crux of those conversations and some ways for young CAs to get into the practice: • Jump in the sea, and you'll learn how to swim. It’s a young age to start anything; the enthusiasm we have in our early twenties is different, and if started, one will find out ways to make it successful. (In my home, my brother did a job for 11 months after his 10th standard, understood the business, and started his own business at the age of 17, like it happen in typical Jain or Gujarati family, and now I can say he's successful.) In short, don't do NPV analysis to find out if it is viable or not; rather, start it and make it viable.(One of my mentors used to say this.) • Do a job in big-sized CA firms (other than the big six), especially firms managed by council members of ICAI, where networking opportunities would be high and one can develop expertise in a particular area. After gaining enough experience, one can quit and start their own practice. • Do a job in a big/mid-sized firm and concurrently start working on your own practice. I have heard of the following options: - I heard that some firms encourage practice and give opportunities to build the practice to young CAs, providing 3 days working in the firm and 3 days to build their own practice. (I have heard this, don’t know exactly which firms are providing this; if anyone is providing or knows about any firm offering such opportunities, please DM me.) - One can do a full-time job in a CA firm and start accepting work on an assignment basis from other practicing CAs and complete work in free time or on weekends. If you have any work opportunities on an assignment basis or if you know anyone who is providing it, please DM me. • One can start doing a job in the Big Six or consultancy firms and, after gaining good connections and understanding of how corporates work, can practice in specialized area like consultancy. For young and newly qualified CAs, with limited networks and no scope for advertising, it's definitely tough to develop a practice, but it's rewarding in many ways. It gives you the opportunity to serve the people and to maintain the dignity of the profession by doing what CAs are known for. Our mother institute, ICAI, allows us to seek help from the fraternity. It's always a growth mindset while maintaining the dignity of the institute, and I have huge respect for it.
