So…new day, new government. Doubtless a day of commentary and opinion to come in the media and the socials. A copper’s lot is an interesting one on these occasions. Whilst we’re all human and many have their own - sometimes strong - views, we’re reminded of our need for neutrality and rightly so. Policing, especially in its leadership I think, must remain detached. Which is handy as I’ve spent my life largely apolitical in my views. When o have voted locally, it’s been for the person, not the party. But it’s maybe indicative of my recent journey that I look at things maybe differently to most. (Promise I’m not going to point this towards an ADHD post…but I’ve never had favourites or a sense of belonging to anything, politics included. I’m very logically-minded, politics is supposedly about doing the best by the people, so the person speaking the most sense will always capture my attention). So why post about it? Irrespective of lack of allegiance, policing will be watching on. For me, it’s the numbers that capture my attention this time around. Not well, either. 60% of the seats from 30-odd percent of the vote screams ‘protest vote’. Take nothing away from the result - a win is a win - but this isn’t the “landslide” the terminology suggest where public opinion is concerned. That means flux. Turnout is reported as dropping below 60% for the second time in history (the other being 2001). Apathy and disenfranchisement are a worrying combination. I hope that I’m wrong and maybe this is just a regular shift in the history of UK politics. But those changes of direction are mirrored elsewhere in the world, with voting populaces voicing dissatisfaction across the world. The next year in France and Germany will be interesting. We will continue to serve the public irrespective. I think that’s one of the calls to policing - the vast majority of us just want to serve and to be there for the public. But when the public are so conflicted on so many issues, it makes for what they call “interesting times”, which means a busy few years coming. Although without fear of contradicting myself in the neutrality stakes…it was a treat to tune in to Radio 4 on the way to work just as they declared Norfolk South West…

It's going to be interesting but I'm more concerned about the next election after the growth of one of the other parties.
