Notes from the field . . . Who let the cows out? Nobody. They get out on their own! My wife and I were driving a back road on our way home from the gym yesterday morning around 7 when I rounded a curve and almost hit a red angus calf running along the road outside a farmer's fence. The farmer is a former client of mine and I have his number in my contacts. So I pulled over and called him to let him know. Of course, he thanked me and said he'd be there shortly to get the youngster back inside the fence.
This was just a simple act of neighborly kindness and something a lot of other folks would have done as well. But I tell the story for 2 reasons:
1. Being involved in your community and knowing your neighbors has exponentially beneficial potential. Had I just drove on home and not reached out to this farmer, the calf could have been the cause of a serious accident. The calf would likely have been killed. There would have been property damage to a vehicle and someone could have been seriously injured - or worse. There also would have been a claim filed with this farmer's insurance company. All these things were potentially avoided with a simple 30 second phone call.
2. I know who the calf belonged to because I live in the same community and I've done business with this person.
This incident serves to illustrate, in a practical way, the advantage of doing business locally, whenever possible. I realize that this is not always possible, but more often than not, it is. And even when it's not, I believe we should at least do business with folks who are "locally minded" or "local in spirit"--recognizing the importance of relationships and trust and, when it comes to insurance, the unique risks often based on locale.
Those things can be hard to get from a call center or an 800 number or AI. I think this is particularly true when considering insurance. If you cannot find someone locally, one should at least try to establish a relationship with an agent that understands your unique needs and exposures. And when it comes to cattle in the road, I'm your guy. 😁
