BOOK REVIEW: This is not a book about hockey. This is a book about economic development, city politics, marketing, and event management. It’s the story about how sports can transform a city. It’s a story about how baby steps can lead to climbing mountains. It’s the story of Columbus, OH, and how minor league hockey reshaped its downtown core. It’s the story of what the Richmond Renegades could’ve been back in the early ‘90’s. Luckily for us Richmonders, we are ostensibly about to experience a second chance. 10/10

As we dive into the college hockey postseason, I wanted to share some fun projects I got to be a part of recently. Over the past few months, I've had the pleasure of working with our Wisconsin men's hockey student-athletes to write a handful of feature articles. Each player had a unique story to share, from Midwestern pride to jellyfish-printed suits to a special connection with a 1986 Paul Simon song. I had a blast putting these stories together and am so excited to highlight more of our exceptional student-athletes next season! 🏈 Michigan's National Championship: A Case of Prioritizing Performance Over Integrity? 🏈 The University of Michigan's recent triumph in the 2023-24 National Championship, amidst a backdrop of a sign-stealing scandal, raises critical questions about the balance between athletic success and ethical conduct in collegiate sports. 🏆 The Victory Amidst Controversy Michigan's victory over Washington, concluding an undefeated season, was overshadowed by a year-long cheating scandal involving sign-stealing. This scandal, ironically grim given the competitive nature of college football, included allegations against a staff member for attending opponents' games to steal signs and led to the eventual suspension of head coach Jim Harbaugh. 🚨 The Ethical Dilemma This situation shines a spotlight on the broader issue in sports: the tension between the relentless pursuit of victory and maintaining the integrity of the game. How do we reconcile the significant achievements of a team with the ethical breaches that may have contributed to its success? Teams have had titles vacated for less (Louisville basketball, anybody?), will similar action be taken here years from now? Or is it a case of "well, everybody does it" and is left alone? 🏅 The Impact on Collegiate Sports Such incidents not only tarnish the reputation of the involved institutions but also raise important questions about the role of governance in collegiate sports. What lessons can be learned about oversight, accountability, and the culture of competitiveness that seems to overshadow fair play? As professionals and enthusiasts in the realm of sports and education, your insights on how we can foster a culture of integrity while celebrating competitive excellence are invaluable. So here's something different for today: I tried my hand at a sports article for The Daily Campus! In this, I talked about the New York Mets' options at the Designated Hitter position for the 2024 season, one of the weak spots of their lackluster 2023 campaign. I talk about flashy free agents and potential in-house options. Read more at the link below: https://lnkd.in/eakbN7Mu

There are some big changes in NCAA D1 Hockey... It's a great time to learn more about NCAA D1, as it was confirmed that the NCAA will move to 26 full scholarships for men’s and women’s Division 1 hockey in 2025-26. They will also limit the teams to 26 roster spots max. This will have significant ramifications for programs currently carrying more than 26 players, or with large recruitment classes for fall 2025. Decisions will have to be made and that will lead to a lot of player movement and NCAA programs changing the number of players they recruit and how they construct their future rosters.
