Neurodiversity is a hot buzzword for employers right now, so why do so many neurodivergent employees still not feel psychologically safe to disclose their condition for fear of stigma from colleagues or management? ➡️An estimated 1 in 7 – some sources say as many as 20% - of the population are neurodivergent, yet workforce statistics are not representative of this. ➡️According to new data from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS), only 22% of autistic individuals are employed. ➡️There is a troubling level of discrimination against neurodiverse people, with a reported 50% of UK managers saying they would not hire neurodivergent individuals. ➡️Neurodivergent employees have historically had difficulties climbing the career ladder and getting promoted and remain under-represented at senior levels. For any HR professional, these statistics reflect a problem. For neurodivergent individuals, these statistics reflect a sad and scary reality. This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week. Find out what neurodivergent employees can bring to your organisation and how to support them to thrive.
