I loved this insightful piece in Nature from a few months ago, advocating for a dramatic shift in how we think about treating cancer. The way cancer is clinically classified hasn't really kept pace with the advances in our understanding of the nuances of the disease, which go far beyond the tissue of origin. This includes factors like the immune microenvironment of tumors as well as targetable tumor-intrinsic pathways, both of which can be shared between tumors of various origins. Yesterday, I read this article entitled "Forget lung, breast or prostate cancer: why tumour naming needs to change" in the journal Nature 💊   The current method applied by all the links in the chain in the chain compartmentalises tumours according to the organ affected. I think we are approaching the limits of what genomics can provide above histology and it will be important to demonstrate utility and value to translating areas like transcriptomics, epi genomics, and proteomics to the clinic beyond discovery to augment what genomics has done to advance our toolbox of therapies against disease while combining with digital pathology and spatial single cell info. We need to move towards serious efforts to move multiomics to the clinic that provide utility and value demonstrated for optimal HCP adoption and patient access

The historic treatment of cancer as a disease of a specific tissue or organ has left many people with rare cancer excluded from clinical trials and potentially effective treatments. With increasing understanding of the genetic changes in cancer, we are redefining how we see it- as a disease where treatment can be personalised on the basis of genetic analysis.
